Charlotte Yung

Mrs Tan, Mrs Nolasco

Junior English

6th October, 2016

My Own Take: “Is Knowing More Better?”

In the process of tackling the question “Is knowing more better”, I find myself trying to find examples in my daily life of how this question might play a part. Thinking about this brought me back to a moment in time on how I felt after I had just heard a piece of important and shocking news.

This happened sometime two years ago, I was in my parents bedroom and we were all watching television when suddenly my parents dropped the bomb. I don’t know how it came up or how I was supposed to react to such information thrown at me. Something came over me and I ran out of the room and locked myself in the toilet and started crying. It might have been because it felt like we had just experienced a lost in the family or I was just shock.

My mum having a miscarriage was very shocking to me but it made me understand how much she treasures me and my sister and how life doesn’t come about easily. After finding out about the news though, it continued to bother me to this day. How hard it is for people who can’t have children and those who kill themselves are really unwise. This piece of news bother me so much that honestly, I wish I hadn’t known.

This might be surprising comparison but often times, I am jealous of people who suffer from downe syndrom. Often times they are ignorant to what is going on in their surroundings and around them, but they always seem to be so happy. To them, ignorance is bliss and knowing more is not better. The truths in this world hurt so much that I wish I didn’t know about them. This might be selfish but learning about all the suffering in the world affects me in negative ways therefore, I don’t want to know about it.

Not knowing more, keeps you safe with the familiar and what you are used to. And I guess that’s just what I want.
