Curriculum Can Be Fluid

My Milkshake moment happened to me last year. We received a brand new curriculum from Pearson. One of my coworkers and I decided to plan our lessons together. We decided to follow the lessons in their exact order as the program suggested. We found ourselves confused when we were reading books about snow in October, and summer books in the middle of winter. After conversations with other coworkers and our principal, we realized we did not have to follow the curriculum so rigidly. It was a freeing moment to decide to do the books in different orders so they made more sense with seasons, holidays, and were more relevant to other things we were doing in class.

New Hire: Flexibility

Flexibility was needed in order to fix the problem discovered from my milkshake moment. It was needed from many different people and needed to be used in many different ways. It began with my coworker and myself being more flexible when it came to our lesson planning. It was much easier to do the lessons in order. It made planning easy and helped to make sure we did not miss any topics. It was important for us to consider the benefits of switching the order and to decide to put in the extra work. My principal also needed to show her flexibility by allowing us to make the changes. This was a very important hire in solving our problem.

Creating Lifelong Learners

I think my students expect me just to teach them what they need to know. They see school as place where a teacher teaches new things and expects them to understand and remember them. The article we read this week makes an important distinction about taking the focus away from how we teach and shifting it to thinking about how students learn. When we focus on the learning process rather than the teaching process, we can build our practices around that. I wonder how beneficial it would be to help shift the mind of learners as well. It's important for students to see themselves as active participants in the learning process.
