Social media has numerous drawbacks, which will be explored in this discussion. One significant drawback is how it fosters insecurity by encouraging people to compare themselves to others. The carefully curated lives displayed on social platforms often lead individuals to feel inadequate or dissatisfied with their own lives. Another issue is the emergence of a new “social currency,” where likes and follows determine a person’s value or popularity. This unhealthy metric reduces self-worth to numbers and external validation. Lastly, social media creates a fear of missing out (FOMO), making people feel excluded or anxious when they are not constantly connected to their phones. Reflecting on life 20 years ago, it’s clear how much simpler and less pressured life was without the pervasive influence of social media.

In conclusion, while social media offers undeniable benefits in connecting people and sharing information, its drawbacks—such as fostering insecurity, creating unhealthy social hierarchies, and amplifying FOMO—demand our attention. By recognizing these challenges, individuals can take steps to use social media more mindfully, prioritizing mental well-being over digital validation.

Social media have disastrous effects on the youth’s minds and mental health, namely insecurity, the FOMO effect and social currency. The most harmful side of excessive social media usage is the feeling of insecurity that pervades the minds of young teenagers. Indeed, their constant exposition to other people’s successes and joys gives the impression that their lives are comparatively mundane and unexciting. Young teens also suffer from the “social currency” framework, which means that their value is quantifiable and that their worth is attributed to virtual likes and comments they receive on theses applications. The proof is that many of them would remove a post because they have not received the expected amount of appreciation they thought it deserved. Finally, social media creates the FOMO effect amongst the youth, which means that they always have the impression that they are missing out on important experiences in their lives. Hence, teenagers are negatively affected by social media because they generate insecurity, FOMO effect and social currency.

Social media has many negative impacts on regular people. One such impact is the feeling of insecurity, most of social medias have something called “Highlight Reels” which are used to share our brightest and best with each other. However, comparing our lives to one another could make us feel insecure about our own life. In addition, people might experience the fear of missing out after seeing something that they didn’t do themselves. This is also proven by the social anxiety many people would develop without social media. These negative impacts have to be brought to our awareness in order to avoid them.

Although there are positive impacts of social media, there are some negative drawbacks that unconsciously occur within the current youth. The first negative impact is the lack of confidence. Social medial acts as a highlight reel, causing others to constantly compare their lives to the only positive highlights of others. This constant comparison leads to different insecurities over time. The second negative impact of social media is the fear of missing out. As people are separated from their respective accounts, people feel social anxiety, which eventually leads to negative withdrawals. In addition, people act as social currency to showcase their lives, for more like and comments. All in all, social medial has unconsciously negatively impacted the lives of the current youth through continuous comparisons between different people.
