Angelo seems to have issues with self control, making choices that are in his best interest,seemingly amused when he is disruptive, lack of safety running in the classroom, down the stairs, jumping from the 3rd or 4th steps to the floor,twirling he frequently lays in the floor, seeming tired rather than sits like most of the children, can tend to lay on his desk.He can be disrespectful and challenge authority. I think he is a bright boy but his reading level is beginning first grade. He does try and seems to like reading. Math is very difficult for him. On the positive side he can and often is a delightful, insightful, and comical second grader. I think he tends to be impulsive and then sometimes regrets the choice. Bus behavior caused him to ride in the van, cafeteria workers have complained about his behavior. Last Friday he poked a hole in his milk carton with his fork as he was in line getting lunch, threw it back in with the other milks and grabbed another, cafeteria lady called him on it,and he acted like he didn't understand what she was talking about. Grabbed and squeezed to poked container, threw the other one back squeezed the cartoon and milk sprayed onto the protective glass. He cleaned it up with supervision. I have to walk with him as he clears his tray because he has been disrespectful to the cafeteria workers. He is usually fine in a one to one situation . I entered the room at approx. 9:50. Some students were at their seats reading independently. One group was engaged in a guided reading discussion with Mrs. Fowler and you were meeting with two students. I spoke with one student who said he just read all day yesterday too. At about 9:55 you called up a group of 5 students. They each had a bag of books. You met with them until 10:20. During that time you stopped and redirected or interacted with other students or groups of students at least 8 times. The students came to your group with no anticipated focus or expectations. Most of your questions were superficial and leading and responded to by one student. They left the group with a handout/framework about character development. They were told "Okay, good job". I asked one student why they were doing it or what they did with it once it was completed and she did not know the answer to either questions. You then called up two students and brought them to the rug with others that were there with magnetic letters. On chart paper you were having them add letters to the "ing" ending. Together you read some poems and they had a copy. They were then told to go back to their seats and highlight the words with "ing" but before they got to their seats you announced to the class "We are done. Put your things in folders and come to the rug". Several students were unclear about where things were to be put away. "In 2 seconds I want you here." Then you said "Okay, one minute ...." Dawn, I see some components and materials in place for the workshop model. You have formed groups, you have tins and magnetic letters for word work, you are trying to incorporate poetry into the process. I know you have done some reading, made some visits and watched webinars. They can be a good resource for you. Here are my suggestions for specific growth goals to make the workshop model more efficient and purposeful:1. Build consistent practices for moving between workshop components.2. Build consistent practices for where materials are kept and how they access them and when.3. Build consistent practices for what are choices if assigned work is completed.4. Highlight the purpose of the work and provide time for completion and reflection. Lets plan to sit down together when we get back from vacation . Please put into your calendar 1/12/15 at 8:45....we will review you goals and these suggestions AND current reading data. I will also try to get in to observe for additonal feedback before that time. I met with the group of 5 because I hadn't met with them on Monday so I extended the time. I made sure everyone in the group responded,and the responses were challenging and lengthy. Each child responded twice at least.I have the questions I asked and will send them to you tomorrow. I followed suggested questions and I had the list of them in front of me, the questions are high level thinking questions.
