Darry is a powerful mama lion defending her cubs. She will sacrifice or give up anything to support and help her cubs. She will stop teaching one cub so that they all can be happier and hunt to get more food. But push the other to it’s limits in training it to become the best it can be.

For example, it says “I just stared at the hole in the toe of my tennis shoe. Me and Darry just didn't dig each other. I never could please him. He would have hollered at me for carrying a blade if I had carried one. If I brought home B's, he wanted A's, and if I got A's, he wanted to make sure they stayed A's. If I was playing football, I should be in studying, and if I was reading, I should be out playing football. He never hollered at Sodapop--- not even when Soda dropped out of school or got tickets for speeding. He just hollered at me” (12). This is Darry, the mama lion training one to be the best it can be and allowing the other to go and collect meat and make money. Mama Lion would do anything for it’s cubs, it shows this again when it says “Darry didn’t deserve to work like an old man when he was only twenty. He had been a real popular guy in school; he had been the captain of the football team and voted boy of the year. But we didn’t have enough money for him to go to college, even with the athletic scholarship he won” (18). He gave up everything, all his opportunities, his athletic scholarship, his class as a possible soc and all his friends and time due to his need to support his family.

Johnny is The hero because he will do anything for what he thinks is right and will even run away for it.

Darry’s archetype is the ruler. The reason I think this is because he is always the leader and nobody can stand up to him. Also he will protect anyone under his wing by any means necessary.

Ponyboy is the adventurer because he even says all throughout the story that he wants to explore and he is definitely adventurous and brave because he wants to find something better, something new, the country. "I wanted to be out of towns and away from excitement. I only wanted to lie on my back under a tree and read a book or draw a picture, and not worry about being jumped or carrying a blade or ending up married to some scatterbrained broad with no sense" (42).

Dallas Winston is the outlaw because he doesn’t really pay attention to laws and he thinks they are there just to be broken. He likes to break rules as long as it’s fun.

Two bit is the jester because he is always cracking jokes and doing things to make others laugh he also likes to do most things sneakily and to live in the moment by doing things against the rules. It shows this when it says “He took life as a joke… Everything he said was so irresistibly funny” (9-10). He adds a lot to the story by the humor he is constantly throwing in “ Life was one big joke to Two-Bit” (9). This shows his good sense of humor and how everything he does is funny, making him the jester.

Randy is the ruler at the beginning of the book but turns into the regular guy after he says this “I'm sick of it because it doesn't do any good. You can't win, you know that, don't you?" he’s basically saying that everything with the “Socs” and the “Greasers” is pointless and nothing will ever happen because nobody can win. So he doesn’t go to the rumble to save himself and his friends.

How and Why the Terms are used

Foreshadowing

The reason they used foreshadowing in the book is to tell the reader that something bad is soon going to happen. Also to let you know that this little accident could lead to a chain reaction of bad things.

Textual Evidence: “ We were careful with our cigarettes--- if that old church ever caught fire there'd be no stopping it” (68). The author uses the words “no stopping it” to show how bad it would be if it did catch fire. Which it later did.

Irony

This isn't a book that I would expect irony from but the irony I found in it is quite funny. In the book they make all the Greasers sound bad and gangster, but nobody thought that when the church started on fire everyone thought that they would laugh but instead they jumped into the burning church and grabbed the kids, they saved the kids instead of themselves.

Textual Evidence “I'll get them, don't worry!" I started at a dead run for the church, and the man caught my arm. "I'll get them. You kids stay out!" I jerked loose and ran on“ (78). That shows how much he wanted to save those kids even though a bigger man could've saved them.

Darry’s personality test is a perfect reflection of Darry. Darry’s personality test shows him as a defender. Which means that he is willing to help and protect anyone, he is very supportive, loyal and hardworking, and he reliable and patient. But he is also has a tendency to repress his feelings and overload himself. All of these traits are traits that Darry possesses and shows. One time when it shows him being loyal and hardworking on page 91 when it says “giving up just to give you a chance he missed out on. He could have stuck you in a home somewhere and worked his way through college. Ponyboy, I'm telling you the truth” (150). This shows that he is hardworking by doing two jobs when he is only twenty years old and does it all for his family. He gave up his other opportunity to get out of being a greaser and truly become a soc. It also shows that he represses his feeling and overloads himself when it says “I don't know... sometimes we get along okay, then all of a sudden he blows up on me or else is naggin' at me all the time” (45). This shows him holding in his feelings until they finally blow up. So overall the personality test very accurately reflects Darry.

Darry's Motivation

Darry is motivated by his love for his siblings to stay strong and support his family. He feels pressure to stay home and pursue helping his family rather than pursuing his own desires like going to college. He instead chose to stay home and do physical labor when he was smart enough to leave his family and go to college. But he didn’t leave because he knew that he had to stay and protect his only family and keep them out of trouble. “Darry didn’t deserve to work like an old man when he was only twenty. He had been a real popular guy in school; he had been the captain of the football team and voted boy of the year. But we didn’t have enough money for him to go to college, even with the athletic scholarship he won” (18). Even more than this he could have easily been a soc if it weren't for his siblings who were greasers, he is stuck in the East side slums when he could be a doctor living a life of riches. He doesn’t deserve this, “It wasn’t only jealousy - Darry had the right to be jealous; he was ashamed to be seen on our side, ashamed to be seen with the Brumley boys, Shepherds gang, even us. Nobody realized it but me and Soda. It didn’t matter to anyone but me and Soda" (142 ). Darry is motivated by his love for his siblings because of the pressure to support them.

Darry’s desires are a big part of The Outsiders because it is his desires are the only thing that keep Sodapop and Ponyboy alive. His main desire is to keep his brothers, gang, and family alive and well, he wants to do this because he was very close to his parents and they died and he’s trying to make sure that never happens again. "Yeah," I said. "Darry always got the most ducks, though. Him and Dad. Soda and I goofed around too much, scared most of our game away" (74). This shows that Darry was very close to his parents. “Without Darry there is no way that the gang would have survived at all. As it says, “We rarely fought among ourselves--- Darry was the unofficial leader, since he kept his head best, Soda and Steve had been best friends since grade school and never fought, and Two-Bit was just too lazy to argue with anyone. Johnny kept his mouth shut too much to get into arguments, and nobody ever fought with Johnny. I kept my mouth shut; too. But Dally was a different matter. If something beefed him, he didn't keep quiet about it, and if you rubbed him the wrong way--- look out. Not even Darry wanted to tangle with him. He was dangerous” (76). All of this shows that Darry will give up anything for what and who he cares for because they are he wants to help, it's almost like a need.

Darry's Flaws

Darry has plenty of flaws, such as his overprotectiveness. It says this multiple times throughout the story like when it says “I was lousing up my schoolwork, too. I didn't do too badly in math, because Darry checked over my homework in that and usually caught all my mistakes and made me do it again” (144). And again when it says “I just stared at the hole in the toe of my tennis shoe. This shows his overprotectiveness for him to achieve what he couldn’t because of his parents death. He is never content with his work and good is not good enough, it always has to be better because that's the way that Darry lived. He just wants the best for Ponyboy, even though Ponyboy can’t see it.
