Chad was named by a man named Rabih al-Zubayr. He defeated the Ouadai. Baguirmi, and Kanem-Bornu kingdoms and renamed the region Chad for the large lake later known as Lake Chad. France later defeats Zybayr's army, takes over, colonized Chad, and it becomes apart of the French Equatorial Africa. In 1946, it became an overseas territory for the French and later represents the French National Assembly. Chad gains independent from the French in 1960 and their first president a man named Francois Tombalbaye. He was an autocratic meaning that he had full control of what policies were being followed and what goals to go after. He banned all other political parties to eliminate all other competition which oppressed the Muslims in the north. In 1973, Francois Tombalbaye was assassinated by members of the Chadian military.
Today, Chad has a much better government but is still lacking economically.
