When we first received this assignment, I knew that plants were going be the main component of my project. I did some research and drew some inspiration from a photo on Google. With this inspiration in mind, my project was going to be a planter box filled with greenery and various flowers. 

I started to create my sketches. I created five different variations of a box. The first sketch was designed with an alternating wave pattern using flowers in the center of the box. The pattern resulted in a wave-like rainbow floral pattern that was surrounded by greenery. The second sketch was a rainbow floral pattern in a straight line down the center of the planter box surrounded by a bordering row of flowers and middle fill with greenery. The third sketch was designed with a helix flower pattern. This time the flowers were not alternating colors every other flower, but every five flowers. The in between spaces of the helix were filled with greenery. For the fourth sketch, the middle of the planter boxes was filled with bundles of flowers changing from one color to the next down the center of the box. The greenery was around the border of the box. When I got to the final sketch, I realized that I wanted to do a zig zag using bundles of flowers placed down the center of the box with greenery in between and around the edges. 

I then headed to Home Depot to buy some plants for the art installation. The flowers I picked up were some perennials, calendulas, primrose, and others I cannot remember the name of. For the greenery, I picked up a fern , Spreger's asparagus, peat moss, and yellow/green poinsettia. The lavender I already had at home. It took me about an hour and have to pick and choose the plants. I chose the most vivid and  aesthetic plants I could find.

After returning home, I began to assemble the planter box. The planter box is put together with wood, glue and nails. With the pledger boxes finished, I filled the box 3/4 full with dirt. From there, I added in to peat moss on the top layer to cover the surface of the dirt. I then began to add in the flowers and the greenery. I arranged the flowers by color starting with red then moving on to pink , purple, blue, yellow, orange, and red again. After, I added the greenery around the edges of the box. Once completed I took pictures of the box on the barren land.

Elements & Principle of Design:
The elements of design used in this installation are like, shape, space, value, color, and texture. In this installation, line is represented by a wavy line made up of different flowers. The different color flowers create a rainbow effect representing the element of design color. The different greenery and flowers provide a difference in texture. The planter box gives the art installation shape, in this particular case, a rectangle. There is negative space surrounding the piece since there is a sense of nothingness in the barren land. Positive space would be the art installation itself. 

Principles of Design: 
In this installation, there is contrast, emphasis, proportion, unity, and variety. Contrast is represented by a difference in the lightness ane darkness in the piece. The flowers and some of the  greenery are bright while the rest of the greenery is dark. There is also a contrast when looking at the bright rainbow effect of flowers and the small range of green colors. There is emphasis on the piece as well. Due to the location of the art installation, the piece itself is emphasized by it's bright and vivid colors with a dull, bland, and single color background. Proportion can be seen in this piece because the plants are proportional to one another. There is also a principle of variety in this art installation. There is variety in color, shape, and size of the plants and flowers. Lastly, there is unity. 
Including all the elements and principles described, the piece comes together well with a sense of completeness.

I thought that would be incorporated into the thumbnail sketch. I took some materials from our yard that would give me good colors for my design. I choose some sticks to make the outline for the mountains, then I filled it in with brown leaves. I thought the leaves gave a nice texture to the mountain. I gathered some yellow leaves from my neighbors yard and put them on top of the project I was working on and I put them in a circle to make a sun. The tree in our front yards sheds alot of red berries and I used them for the rays of the sun. I took some juniper branches from our neighbors tree the grows from outside and use them for the trees in the mountains. I thought the tree were arranged in lines. I started with the taller branches on the side and then I put the smaller ones in the middle. The trees took the form a forest at the foot of a mountain. The sun was in the picture, so I decided to take the picture in the evening. I like the way sun rises look, so I was happy to make this installation in our front yard. My older brother came to visit me for the first time so we were constantly on the move trying to see all of the Bay Area while he was here. We went to Santa Cruz and we decided the beach will be the best spot to make some art! 

I showed him my sketches and he really like the giant sea grass that was all over to we decided to incorporate some of the dead branches we found. Ben is an artist as well so it is always my favorite when we can put our brains together and try to make something neat. 

We started by collecting shells that we could put into a serpentine pattern at the base of the grass. Then we used some broken sharp-edged shells to draw patterns and cut lines in the sand. After that we found a giant clump of reeds that just so happened to line the cuts we made in the sand perfectly!

I really enjoyed this project even though it kept getting stomped on by people at  the beach :D.

As for the elements of art in this piece I really wanted to go for uniform color, utilize the space of the open ocean behind the piece, and include multiple different textures. The scratchy yet soft looking sea grass, sharp and cold shells, velvety soft flower petals, and the dense/slippery reeds behind it trailing into the ocean.

The principles I tried to look out for were balance and variety. I am not very superstitious but I really enjoy odd numbers when it comes to art. I included odd numbers of the items to create that version of balance for myself. The variety of different ocean items was cool to see all in a bunch like that as well! 

If I could do it differently next time I would love to be able to dedicate a lot more time to the installation and make it very neat and manicured. But the bit of wabi sabi in this one is also endearing. People added to the artwork with footprints and dog paws really showing the fast decline of a land art installation. My original plan was instead of the leafs, I wanted to use flowers but I don’t have any flowers in my backyard. So instead I picked leafs off my lemon tree and pick up thin sticks behind my backyard. I honest liked how it came out, the way I laid it out looks great. I decided to use my backyard as my work area and it didn't go well since my resources were really limited. My idea was to replicate something I saw in a game and I like how it came out. I used all the fallen branch and leaf's from the orange tree from my back yard. I didn't have a clear goal at first. I just wanted to do a project with rocks as the theme, but I didn't have a specific idea of what to do. Until I saw the pile of small stones and a larger one. The little stones represent the pooling of information or knowledge. The larger stones represent self or an aggregate of knowledge. The leaves represent scattered information. I ended up choosing the idea with the three rocks, that you can see in the thumbnail sketch. When I first arrived at the site, there was so many leaves scatter all around the rocks. A lot of materials to work with, but a pain to clear as I want the grass, just green with the only presence of leaves being the spiral lines. I started picking up the leaves after 20 minutes, it still looked like a mess, it also didn't help that it was windy and occasionally blowing, undoing my progress. After thinking for a bit, I decided to adjust my design and how they are arranged. Instead of the lines going in towards the middle of the three rocks. The leaves are simply circling each of the rocks.  I choose to make the yellow leaves spiral for longer, and the orange/brown leaves be cut off as it is about to spiral. I simply thought it looks more pretty, if it is like that, since the yellow leaves stand out a lot. In the end, I am happy with the final outcome of my design. In a way, there is a little story to it, with the yellow leaves continues to move, while the others orange/brown one being cut off short.

In the final design, one of the principles of design in this installation is movement, with the lines moving in a circular motion around the rocks. Color is also evident in the installation. This piece was created on the SJCC campus using the elements of color, texture, and line, among others.

I started by walking around campus and noting the available materials and locations as well as the colors associated with each one. I initially selected the Body statue right outside of the art studio (also included in sketches) because it already had an interesting shape and concept, but realized that it most likely did not qualify as a 'natural' land. Diagonally next to it is a drainage ditch with grasses and succulents planted inside. These are typically used to divert and catch running water so that nearby man-made structures do not flood with rain. I thought it would be fun twist to use nature to imitate nature.

To create a semblance of flowing water, I arranged the beautiful, bright yellow gingko leaves around the grasses. Nearby was a different type of grass that had dried into needle-like hardness. I gathered up the purple red maple leaves and speared them onto the grass in bunches of 3-5, making representational dried 'flowers' to stick straight into the tufts. Unfortunately, I misjudged the scale of the area in relation to the maple flowers. The flowers are clear in-person but do not show up very well in the photo as they lend into the reddish tambark in the background.

Overall, the yellow and red colors pop brightly against the green background.The texture from both types are harvest leaves gives the 'river' depth and the 'flowers' volume. My creative process was that I thought it would've been interesting if I made a flower out of flower petals.  I also wanted to fill in the spaces with rocks to occupy the background. I made the middle part with the yellow leaves that had already fallen to the ground. The elements of art I use is pattern arranged in a repetitive way to make the flower shape, and color using brightly colored items to make it stand out, and texture, to make it look busy.
