Robertson reveals the atrocities and history of residential schools while illuminating both the culture and perseverance of Cree people. This resource speaks directly to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's Call to Action 62 and 63 — "Developing and implementing Kindergarten to Grade Twelve curriculum and learning resources on Aboriginal peoples in Canadian history and building student capacity for intercultural understanding, empathy, and mutual respect" (TRC, 2015, p.7). While this resource is age-appropriate for school-age children, it is important that as educators we be mindful of the exploration of sensitive and controversial issues that may provoke emotional responses in young learners.

The award-winning children’s book, the Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats follows a young boy named Peter as he explores his neighbourhood after a big snowfall. This book captured the magic of a snow fall and childhood innocence in such a simple way. Using cut-outs, water colors, and collage, they are strikingly beautiful and understated images.
I first read this book in my Children's Literature class in undergrad and it was fascinating to see that there is so much history and discussion about this book. For the first time in history, we have an African American protagonist who walks us through his journey in the snow. During the time the book was written, this was unheard of. However, I think this is a wonderful book to read to students as it brings culture to diversity to the classroom in a way that we can all relate to.
