Dr. TJ Eckleburg Quotes

"The eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg are blue and gigantic - their retinas are one yard high." (p.23)
- In this scene, Tom wants to introduce Nick to his mistress, Myrtle. The eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg are introduced in this scene in order to reinforce the idea that the Eyes are watching and all knowing of all immoral acts such as the affair between Tom and Myrtle. Tom stops at George Wilson's house to pick up Myrtle to go to their apartment. The eyes are described as "blue and gigantic" because their size represents the power that the eyes hold and how it is all seeing, it's even called a "God" by George Wilson.
(Thuy Hoang)

"Standing behind him, Michaelis saw with a shock that he was looking at the eyes of Doctor T.J. Eckleburg which had just emerged, pale and enormous, from the dissolving night." (p.159-160)
- After the incident with Myrtle and the yellow car, George Wilson was in a world of pain. George Wilson was pacing around his office at the time of this quote. After looking out the window, he sees Dr. TJ Eckleburg's eyes and feels dishonor from the eyes. Weirdly, the eyes do not give their own emotion. The people that observe this random painting in the Valley of Ashes give it that look as if the eyes are disappointed in the people.
(EJ Tran)

The theme that most relates to the symbol of Dr. TJ Eckleburg is the American Dream. Eckleburg's eyes are always somewhat condescending upon those who are living the American Dream, yet also being immoral and taking advantage of the poor, especially those in the Valley of Ashes.Whenever any character comes into the Valley of Ashes, the eyes are uncomfortably watching over them. Also whenever an incident occurs, the eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg are watching over, making the rich and powerful feel guilty for their immoral acts. Because everyone in the Valley of Ashes wants to achieve the American Dream but cannot afford to succeed, the eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg look over them as an omnipresent figure, almost like a God, as said by George Wilson.

The Eyes of Dr. TJ Eckleburg are meant to represent God in the sense that he can see all no matters what. The affair between Myrtle and Tom relates to The Eyes because even though George Wilson can't be sure if the affair is real, George says that Myrtle can't fool God. The affair between Daisy and Gatsby are also related to the Eyes of TJ Eckleburg as it is an act of immorality that is morally shunned upon by The Eyes.
The Eyes of TJ Eckleburg are also located in the Valley of Ashes, which looks over its poor residents, while also shaming the rich that drive by the VoA for taking advantage of the poor. The Eyes are meant to resemble an omnipresent entity that looks over all residents of the VoA while condemning the immoralities of the rich.
