Sylvia Plath’s literary work addresses social crises that women were facing, in which women were isolated from society and enclosed in their families. Furthermore, her writing displays the rift between the idea of The American Dream versus the cold reality women face when trying to achieve their goals in a society dominated by males. In addition, Sylvia herself struggled with social crises and mental illness, which she could never overcome, eventually committing suicide at the age of 30.

The website summarizes Sylvia Plath’s life, including her educational background, marriage, and achievements in the realm of literature. According to the biography, Sylvia Plath's marriage was bleak and miserable. Her relationship with her husband Ted Hughes made her suffer. Hughes' domestic violence against her and his affair with Assia led to the end of their marriage. The failure of her marriage was a severe blow to Plath and later became a decisive factor in her suicide. Plath’s experience made it obvious that she is a victim of marriage and a family that brought her torment. Furthermore, it draws a big picture of females being the vulnerable group of the patriarchal society, where they are treated equally and therefore unable to attain their American Dream.

Sylvia Plath in one of her literary works wrote about her family life as a child. The Poem Daddy focuses on Plath feeling about her deceased father, a professor of biology at Boston University, who died when she was at the age of eight. In the poem, Plath wrote, “Daddy, I have had to kill you. / You died before I had time” (Plath). Plath uses exaggerated language to emphasize her resentment towards her father allowing readers to feel her struggle and pain. In the later part of the poem, Plath also characterizes her father as “a Nazi and her mother very possibly part Jewish” (Plath). Thus, she depicts her father as a Nazi and her mother as Jewish to indicate the morbid relationship between males and females in many families of the patriarchal society.

At first, Sylvia Plath’s personal entries were concealed. But 19 years after Plath’s death, her editor Frances McCullough finally made it public, providing readers and scholars an insight into Plath's motivations and personality. In one of the entries, Plath reveals that what worries her the most is “the idea of being useless: well-educated, brilliantly promising, and fading out into an indifferent middle age” (Plath). These words convey Plath’s concern of being socially alienated because of the burden of a family after marriage, which has resonated with many women in the mid-20th century. Under the pressure from family, women were obligated to give up their dream in order to attain a figure of “good wife and mother”. Many women struggled to find their true selves but ended up fading into the environment. Thus, Plath’s diary address the harsh realities women were facing in a society dominated by males, and it displays the rift between the idea of The American Dream versus the cold reality.
