In this activity I want you to recall at least three times in three different stories that someone stood up to a bully, give details about the incident (who was it, were they the bully, how did they help them). When thinking about someone helping someone being bullied, it often leads to a form of punishment for the bully. However, sometimes wires can get crossed and the wrong person can be punished, or no one gets punished at all. Can you recall one scenario where the bully was punished (whether big or small), one scenario where no one was punished (this can be a trick question, think about if authoritative figures got involved or not), and one scenario where the wrong person was punished? As before, give details about your answers why do you feel they fall into this category, and how did it make you feel personally when you found out they were punished (or not punished)? 

In the book Runt by Nora Raleigh Baskin, we get the perspective of multiple students (through different years) throughout the book. Come up with at least four scenarios where someone was bullied, go into detail about the situation, characters involved and outcome. Pick one of your four scenarios and put yourself in the shoes of the victim. How would you have handed the situation, would you have handled it differently than the character in the book, the same? Explain you reasoning. Pick another scenario (a different one than the one you just picked) and tell me how you’d feel if you were in the victims’ shoes, angry, sad, scared? Go into detail about your emotions as well as the scenario (you can change up the scenario a bit; for example: if in the book what happens to the victim after the scenario is not described, you can make up how they feel after the scenario).

Main victim Elizabeth sees what it's like in the dog world: who is the leader of the pack, who is not. She is soon to discover that middle school isn't much different. When the most popular girl in school: Maggie takes a disliking to Elizabeth, thinking Elizabeth smells bad and is always thinking she's better than everyone else; it's time for Maggie to get revenge.
When the captain of the middle school basketball team bullied a teammate so much the teammate gets suspended, the team decides to rally around their fallen comrade and stand up to their show off of a captain.
With other antics such as sibling rivals, to the fact that bullying was a thing in the 80's and 90's. Runt is a beautiful story that helps readers question what really is a bully, and what really is a victim? Is it really just black and white or is there some gray area's?

However, instead of yelling at him and getting mad the kids surround Pete and ask him why he's being mean. Pete explains he was bullied in his old school so he decided to bully at his new school. The kids explain that in their school they have an anti-bullying policy and rally around Pete to not
only take the anti-bullying pledge, but to show him that they all want to be his friends.

Friedman mcontino https://padlet.com/mcontino/cnwcg8qjbchm2vnj/wish/1387813098 Unlike most non-fiction books this book doesn't give the readers advice or ideas on who to talk to. Instead this book gives readers multiple different essays with multiple different perspectives. With essays such as "bullying is a life-threatening problem for American children" and the opposing viewpoint of "most bullying and other conflicts between children is normal and healthy." This book gives information and statistics. Perhaps better suited for a parent this book helps people realize the difference between bullying and old school joking/playground taunts. This book gives readers a chance to analyze each essay which could be good for both library use and classroom use; it's also good for parents because it can help them interact with their student and learn via this book if they are indeed being bullied without openly asking.

When Katie becomes friends with some mean girls at school Katie begins to pick on Monica, and pressure Monica into not being friends with other people. Noticing how upset she is Monica's mom asks her if she's okay and Monica explains what's been happening. Monica's mother tries to smooth things out by telling Monica she should talk to Katie about it, but that didn't work, and in fact...things got worse. Things got so bad Monica began to fake being sick in order to skip school. Eventually, Monica's mother finds out and Monica talks to her mother about what's been going on. Her mother and her work out many different ways Monica could stand up to Katie the next time She's being a bully. Monica learns to stand up for herself, and even though she's no longer friends with Katie she's happy and has found outlets to help her with her life. Also important about this book, in the back few pages include ways that parents can talk to their child about bullying and ways to help aid it in stopping.

Joey decides to go home and talk to his parents; he asks them to please talk to his teacher in order to get help. After talking to the teacher  she makes sure to pay attention and put an end to any bullying Joey experiences, with the help of his teacher Joey not only does better in school, but becomes a better person all together!

Thomas feels all the adults are concerned about Kyle whenever he's upset, and Thomas feels nearly all the kids are afraid of Kyle and that's why no one will stand up for Thomas. Thomas slowly becomes depressed doubting everything he says and does, and begins taking his issues out on his friends and family. Slowly Thomas comes to realize that being different is a good thing, because that's what makes us interesting an unique. Thomas begins to stand up to Kyle when he bullies him, causing a domino effect in which the other kids also begin to stuick up for Thomas. Eventually, Thomas also realizes that there are plenty of things he's good at and that he is somebody.

They complain about her hair, that Kelly is poor, and that she's ugly. One dat Kelly meets a new friend Alex. Alex tells Kelly to not listen to the mean girls because she's not ugly! He also gives her advice to talk to a teacher. Kelly feels much better after that and decides to go talk to the teacher. After talking to the teacher and receiving aid Kelly's school life becomes much better. She continues to be friends with Alex and finds different ways to avoid the bullies and mean girls!
With statistics and facts interspersed throughout the book this book is an excellent teaching method for younger kids.

As time goes on and Dexter's questioning of Robin get's deeper and deeper Dexter begins to regret what he did and decides to get to the bottom of why he punched Robin in the first place.

The bullies figure out it was Josh's father who called, and try to go after both Josh and his friend. As stated, this is only the first in a series of graphic novels by this author. To figure out what happens to Josh and his friend you'll need to read the rest of the series!

That's exactly what happens when during school Rachel's teacher brings out an ugly sweater and asks whos it is. When no one speaks up someone shouts that they think it's Rachel's. When Rachel insists it's not hers the teacher gets mad and states that it has to be hers because she remembers her wear it. She even forces Rachel to wear it after Rachel shoved it off her desk in frustration. Eventually a classmate approaches Rachel and says she remembers that the ugly sweater is hers. This short story shows people that anyone can be a bully even an adult, and when that happens you need to find another outlet for who to talk to about the bullying.

Titular character Vanessa is being bullied, on her walk home from school; and one of her classmates sees the bullying. Upset about what happens she decides she needs to do something. The next morning she gets up early dresses and decides to walk to school with Vanessa. Soon another girl joins them, then a boy, soon it seems like the whole school is walking with the two girls! Knowing she's safe and with friends Vanessa enters the school happy and smiling. Like some of the other books discussed so far, this book also has sections in the back of the book for both children and parents/adults about what to do when you see someone being bullied!

As well, this book contains plenty of quizzes for young children and teens who may be questioning certain aspects of their life with bullies. Aija Mayrock shares her own stories about bullying, her own ways she over came bullying and her poems she wrote about what it felt like during those times (both of bullying and after bullying). With advice, survival tips and more Mayrock also aids teens in finding their own outlets when it comes to bullying, whether that be talking to a teacher friend or parent; or finding hobbies such as acting or writing. Having teens learn from another teen is a great reason why this book is so important.
