Why do we study TTTC?

We study literature because it helps us learn about parts of the world we can't experience, and the different perspectives they are lived in, and we study it through reading and analyzing it. We study TTTC because it gives us the perspective of someone going through was or something else with a lot of emotional trauma.

2. How are we affected by literary texts in various ways? In what ways is meaning constructed, negotiated, expressed and interpreted in TTTC?
There are many meanings constructed in TTTC, mainly his loss of innocence, that is constructed, negotiated, and expressed from his own stories, his friends's stories, and stories that aren't real but convey the feeling it brings at the time.

4. He begins the paragraph by describing members of his personal life; his "aunts and uncles", and a "nine year old girl named Linda" begging him to fight for their country. The connotation of friends and family is loving and supportive, people who he would not dare to disappoint. As something as understanding and sympathetic that these people are, it is very meaningful that they urge O'Brien to go, because they truly want what's best for him in life. O'Brien casually mentions Linda throughout the novel and the reader isn't exposed to his true admiration for her until the last chapter, and as he cares about these people very much, he is inclined to listen to their pleas to go to war. At the end of the excerpt, O'Brien lists others who desire him to fight, including "members of the United States Senate," "Huck Finn", "Abbie Hoffman," and previous "dead soldiers back from the grave". This metaphor that he is seeing these respected, important figures who all want him to go to war implies that if he did not, he would be letting down important people. These people are all very American, either essential people in forming the country he lives in or protagonists in American media. They encourage O'Brien to do what is best for his country and what a real American hero would do. While O'Brien contemplates the life-changing decision of going to war, he encounters these passionate yet key members in his life, who are "whooping and chanting" for him to make the correct decision of fighting for his country.

Linda Krumholz claims (in "The Ghosts of Slavery: Historical Recovery in Toni Morrison’s Beloved") that finding a voice for the thoughts and experiences of women is central to the "healing," historical recovery theme and structure of the book. According to Krumholz, Morrison’s novel "adapts techniques from modernist novels, such as the fragmentation of the plot and shifting narrative voice, to compel the reader to actively construct an interpretive framework" (109). How does the novel specifically address issues of gender, writing and power? How does the structure and style of the novel give voice to "the thoughts of the women of 124, unspeakable thoughts, unspoken" (Beloved 199)? I think it shows a lot of women issues with Sethe's relationship with Paul D and his relationship with not only her but Beloved as well. I think this accurately displays the different way men and women feel emotions, and their perspective on relationships. It shows that men are often perceived as though they have the power in relationships and her writing shows this.

Intertextuality
How valid is the notion of a "classic" literary text? What makes Persepolis "literary" even though it is a graphic novel?
Persepolis, while being made up of mostly images, still is a very valid form of literary work. Satrapi uses detailed literary techniques throughout her writing to let the reader analyze her meaning throughout the text, which makes it highly regarded in the literary world.

Time and Space
What insight did Persepolis give you into Iranian life during and after the revolution?
It gave the reader an inside perspective on the Iranian revolution, one of innocence and it was as though we learned about it alongside Satrapi. This naiveness shows how little she truly knew about the revolution at the time it was happening.

How does Persepolis connect to other works we've read? Be detailed in how it connects with global issues and thematic and stylistic ideas to other works.
Persepolis connects well with the other novels we have read in class in that it shows how an individual or group of minorities are oppressed and how they react to it. This can be seen in Auschwitz and After when Delbo describes the conditions Jews faced by Nazis, and in almost all the other books we have read as well.

How does Persepolis connect to our world today?
In today's world, people are very against being controlled by the government. Something similar in today's society I noticed is the refusal to wear masks for Covid in comparison to refusal to wear the veil in the novel. This shows individual resistance against government control.
