Conception begins at the moment that a man's sperm reaches a woman's egg, which is known as a ovum. Each egg and sperm carry 23 chromosomes. 44 of these chromosomes are matched in a pair in the nucleus of the egg, while the other 2 chromosomes are connected and utilized to determine the baby's gender. This combination forms the zygote. In order to fertilize the egg, the sperm penetrates the outside of the ovum and makes its way into the nucleus. This begins the chain reaction that leads to prenatal development.

These two weeks occur from the moment of conception until the beginning of the third week of pregnancy. It attaches the cell to the uterine wall and splits to form the placenta and embryo, which will hold the baby.

The period of the embryo occurs between the third and eighth week of the mother's pregnancy. During this period, the baby's body is formed along with the organ systems.

The period of the fetus, which is the longest span of the pregnancy, lasting from the 9th week until the birth of the baby.
