I can only imagine the difficulties that the last two years have wrought upon our schools. As a former teacher, I would like to extend my personal gratitude for those who remain in the classrooms, offices, cafeterias, transportation, and janitorial services.

Too often we forget that it is not just the teachers that it takes to run an educational program. It is true that the teachers bear the largest portion of the effort to educate children. I don't think the general public has any idea how dedicated and hard-working most of them are.

Amidst all that is going on with the pandemic, McAuliffe School in Oxnard recently experienced a water leak over the winter break that resulted in a flood of our school. Several classrooms, hallways, the main office and staff lounge were severely damaged. As a result, the efforts of administrators, after school program staff, custodians, maintenance and nutritional service workers, office staff, specialists, para educators, technology experts, and fellow teachers came to the aid of our staff affected by displacement.

As our staff and students walk down, now concrete halls, adjust to a shift of work place, search for lost materials, and maneuver around storage containers on the playground, there is not a whisper of defeat but ongoing determination to bring the best educational opportunity to our students.

I express my gratitude to all those who reached out to help our Challenger community, as we slowly recover from yet another obstacle. Thank you for your time, effort, and concern. You are appreciated.

I would like to say Thank you to our office manager Mary Smith. Upon return from winter break for the first two weeks she went above and beyond trying to provide continuity and familiarity to our students. We had multiple teachers call in sick and with no substitutes she was able to make sure every single class was covered!

She would have campus supervisors put notes on the classroom doors to tell the kids which class to go to, she was pulling attendance rosters by the periods for each teacher and all the teachers would come in to check with her to help cover classes. She really promoted the team mentality to help during this frenzied time for 2 solid weeks. She was still able to perform her normal responsibilities as well during this time.

Because she is such an unsung hero she really believes that it was everyone else doing all the work. This was a SUPER HEROIC outstanding job.

Although her title is Staff Secretary, she performs the duties of an Office Manager and many more duties that are needed to help our students. Mariana has a wealth of knowledge about Moorpark College courses, registration procedures, and the MyVcccd Student portal. She helps guide our students who need extra assistance navigating through the procedures. She is also the friendly face for all our visitors and a friendly helpful voice to all that call our school.

I cannot say enough about this school and the staff. Even with everything going on they are very organized and always contact back in a timely manner. I had to mention my daughters teacher as well. My daughter is excited to go and learn everyday. I can see how much she has learned in this past school year. The school has the best communication with parents. Throughout these past couple of years, they continue to maintain a positive attitude and work so hard to make sure students are the #1 focus. My daughter absolutely loves accelerating in school, but keeping her stress level down takes work. Mr. Power's has her number and makes my life with her academics bearable. His "brick" system is her favorite. She goes in whenever possible and he is always more than willing to give her more examples for practice. She makes sure to attend his weekly online zoom tutoring sessions. Doing well for her is fed by teachers like Mr. Powers. I could not be more grateful especially after a year at home that did nothing but bring my daughter down.

So thank you Mr. Powers for bringing my girl back to life and making her love for learning shine like a golden brick. You are her flagship to an amazing future.

Today a child cried when he was being sent home for a sore tummy. When I talked to him he said his tummy hurt but the tears were because he did not want to leave his teacher and friends. These tears are testament to the love that so many of our children feel for the people who greet, support, console, challenge, and teach them to be great scholars and citizens. My heart swells with pride and gratitude for the selfless and strategic work our supervisors, office staff, custodial staff, nurse, and teachers do on a daily level with relentless optimism, patience, and caring so that the world may have more happy, literate, empathetic people who can solve problems together.

HUGE shout out to all the staff and the principal of this school. My kids feel safe, happy, and appreciated here. Every single staff member at this school has gone above and beyond for the students. During this difficult time, they have showed there is nothing they wouldn't do for the students. The office staff is amazing with giving notices and answering questions. The principal is an amazing part of the school. She works hard juggling and overseeing every issue, and putting the kids first. Big shout out to the health nurse for handling the safety and well being of the children. All the teachers are amazing and deserve alot of appreciation. Also thanks to the ladies in the cafeteria prepping and providing food everyday for every student. Also the custodians for having the biggest job of cleaning/sanitizing. Not to mention handling every issue that comes up that's not too fun of a job to do. Another great person to mention is the counselor. So much work to help the kids who have had a hard time through all this. Thanks to all the support staff for all the hours of work. To the noon aides for watching over and keeping an eye out on the children. Safety has always been important and they get the job done. Big shout out to the one who always makes the kids happy on special days. Going above what the job description is and making it fun for the kids. Also shout out to the librarian for always being available with reading materials for the students. Another shout out to the PE teacher for making it fun for the kids to be active. Thanks speech teachers, reading teachers and all support staff. Super job Grace Thille staff keep up the good work and thanks for everything you do for the students. The entire staff at Mupu Elementary School is to be commended for the amazing dedication, professionalism, endurance, and teamwork this past month in the face of covid! The staff consists of 8 teachers, 3 instructional assistants, an office manager, and custodian.(Thirteen staff members in total) Four teachers, the secretary, one instructional assistant, and the custodian were out ill! Yep, only seven staff members left to keep the school running and teaching and learning continued! The staff worked together to teach all the students, provide lunches, supervise the grounds, empty trash cans, clean, and cover the office. We had wonderful parents volunteer to help with crossing guard duty and recess supervision. The teachers filled out independent study forms and gathered essential work for over 300 days of absences in January! Mupu teachers and staff are truly the "DREAM TEAM" and seem to have "Super Powers!". It has been my pleasure to be their Interim Superintendent / Principal and work right along side them also teaching in classrooms!
