This assignment opened my eyes to the complexities of counseling clients with substance use disorders. Throughout this assignment, I learned that especially in addiction counseling, progress is not linear and the way of tracking progress is different than most disciplines in the counseling field. Moreover, I have learned that the value of patience is crucial for an addictions counselor since setbacks and relapses are a part of recovery. Additionally, I learned that educating clients about addiction and relapse can help increase the client's awareness and insight of their disorder. Assisting a client in understanding the internal workings of their body can empower them to take change of their recovery journey. Overall, this assignment helped increase my awareness and understanding of treating a client with substance use disorder.

This assignment made me feel as if Rue were an actual client of mine. If this were to be the case, I would prioritize rapport building in the first couple of sessions since Rue has trouble with trust and forming relationships. Developing a strong therapeutic alliance would allow Rue to be honest and open about her use with me. Having a full understanding of her substance use between sessions would allow me to track her progress and make changes to the treatment plan when necessary. Moreover, I would focus on processing her past trauma and experiences with loss before tackling her substance abuse. Afterward, I would utilize CBT interventions and motivational interviewing to lead Rue toward recovery. I would focus on the development of coping skills throughout our sessions. During this time, I would remind myself to remain patient and to trust the process. The more that I motivate, empower, and trust my client will succeed, the more likely they will feel the same!
