Part 2- The Reaction

1. If I had to choose what part stirred me was the section about combatting climate change and building a clean energy economy. This platform was created three years ago and I feel as if nothing has been done to prevent climate change even more. You see in the news daily about the pollution in our planet's oceans. It also stirs me to think that the citizens of our country are not doing their part and taking a stand to halt climate change. I feel as if the government should intervene more than they are on this particular aspect. I understand that things like climate change take time to solve, but more laws need to be put in place to help clear up the problem.
2. While reading through this platform I felt the most hopeful when I read the section titled, "provide quality and affordable education." I feel as if I felt the most hopeful in reading this section being that I am in college right now gaining an education at an affordable price. Every American citizen, regardless of their race or social class should absolutely have the right to obtain an education through schooling. The whole idea of making debt-free college a reality. With tuition prices raising each year, more high school graduates are choosing other routes and sometimes making poor decisions, simply because they can't afford to attend college so they don't go. While making college free for all to attend has many perks it also would have its downfalls. We all know that nothing is truly free. Taxes for citizens would certainly rise so that the government could pay the colleges and universities the money that they would be missing out. That subject has a lot of gray areas to sort out, but the idea is certainly hopeful to me and my age group.

3. My favorite position on the 2016 Democrat party platform was the position titled, "ensure the health and safety of all Americans." This section or position included a lot of key information that is very important in every citizen's daily lives. This position included securing universal healthcare, supporting community health centers, reducing prescription drug costs, enabling cutting-edge medical research, combatting drug and alcohol addiction, treating mental health, supporting those living with autism and their families, securing reproductive health, rights, and justice, ensuring long-term care, services, and supports, protecting and promoting public health, ending violence against women, and preventing gun violence. This was solely my favorite because upon reading that each of these sections had to say about this position, I feel as if all of the above listed subjects are very important in our daily lives.

4. Before reading this party platform, I had no idea what subject matter would exactly be included. I figured that a party platform would just include strictly about government and laws, not specific problems and rights of American citizens. I feel as if the problems and ideas that I listed in question 3, I had little to no true understanding of the sections listed behind the subject matter.

Before this assignment I had never read a party platform or even knew exactly what they were. Reading the entire thing was overall very interesting for me. And for the most part I felt as if I could agree with all of the major arguments and points that were made. The parts that maintained the status quo was the section on confronting global threats. I feel as if for the most part that section would remain the same each year. While the countries might change and the way that we confront those threats and issues. There will always be issues and serious international or "global" threats but they will relatively stay the same or remain the status quo. The section, "Preventing Gun Violence," in the Party Platform is more realistic and up to date then our book. The details and description in the book is more confusing than the description in the party platform. Yes, I feel as if the party platform addressed the most pressing issues that are present in our country today. While reading through the party platform, I remember during the last election, some of those topics being discussed. The platform made me more aware of what the federal government does. I cannot think of anything that would make the platform better.

I chose to focus my universal design assignment on the 2016 Democratic Party Platform. Democrats believe that cooperation is better than conflict, unity is better than division, empowerment is better than resentment, and bridges are better than walls. They focus on the sole idea that we, as Americans, are solely stronger together. Democrats believe that we are stronger when we have an economy that works for everyone. They noted that our nation's long struggle from race is far from over and we must face that reality and we must fix it. Democrats believe that a good education is a basic right of all Americans and that we must build a cradle-to-college pipeline for all American students. Democrats know that every child, no matter who they are, how much their families earn, or where they live, should have access to a high-quality education, from preschool through high school and beyond. It is also important to be able to balance work and family without fear of punishment or penalty. Democrats believe that climate change poses a real and urgent threat to our economy, our national security, and our children’s health and future. Democrats are the party of inclusion. Democrats believe that everyone deserves the chance to live up to his or her God-given potential. Democrats believe that we must protect Americans’ right to vote, while stopping corporations’ outsized influence in elections. Democrats have been fighting to secure universal health care for the American people for generations, and we are proud to be the party that passed Medicare, Medicaid, and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Democrats believe that America must lead in the world to grow our economy, protect our interests and values, and make our country safer and more prosperous. We will strengthen our homeland security, deal wisely and firmly with those who seek to imperil America or our partners, deter aggression, and promote peace. American leadership is essential to keeping us safe and our economy growing in the years ahead.
