This is kind of similar to "bringing a character to life" but dialogue is a great method of character development. It can grab attention of readers and signal significant changes.

Dialogue can have multiple affects on a story. A couple of them being: One, dialogue can help advance the plot. Instead of droning through three paragraphs of explanation, you can easily get the same info through the character's transmitted speech. Two, it helps define a character. A cast in a story don't all sound the same and each one has their own speech pattern that you start to pick up on as you read through the story. Some characters might use slang while others may sound a lot more formal / polite.

There’s a lot that has already been contributed, but I agree with it all. It moves the plot along, adds to the story, creates suspense, gives personality to a character, and connect the reader to a character.
