GENERATIVE ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) POLICY: In this class, you will be allowed to use AI to help you brainstorm, outline, research, and write your comparative research paper, with some limitations and warnings:

Whenever you use AI, you must cite it, similar to citing research papers that you base your writing on. We will discuss in class how to appropriately cite AI sources in your writing.

Currently, AI is notorious for producing inappropriate or just plain make-believe citations. Do not trust it to give you accurate information regarding scientific papers -- be careful!

As you develop your paper, I will speak with each of you individually about your ideas and your paper outline. During our discussion, I expect you to be able to explain and defend your topic, and how you have organized your paper.

You are responsible for the content of your work. AI is a somewhat untrustworthy tool, not a replacement for your own knowledge and creativity. Currently, it is of questionable value in summarizing the primary scientific literature. If you submit work that is factually incorrect or incoherent, your grade will be affected significantly (this is true whether you use AI or not).

IMPORTANT NOTES:
1. This policy may change throughout the semester, as we all learn more about the abilities and shortcomings of AI.
2. This is my policy. Other faculty likely will have very different approaches as we come to grips with the impact of AI in teaching and in the wider world. Do not assume that these guidelines will apply in your other classes -- ask your professors if you have any doubts!

Artificial Intelligence Policy: We live in an exciting time where tools like ChatGPT can solve many basic computing problems! Being able to effectively use these tools is going to be a valuable skill. However, having these tools complete the entirety of your assignments is not going to help you learn the content in this course. I encourage you to use AI tools to clarify concepts or help talk through a problem. That being said, all writing and code you submit should be your own work. If I see your work shows a level of accuracy and complexity that is not characteristic of a learner at this level, I will consider this a breach of academic honesty and act accordingly.
