The founder of Buddhism is Siddhartha Gautama.
Siddhartha was born into a noble family. According to the legend the baby(Siddhartha) had marks of being a great man. A prophecy said that if the child stayed at home he was destined to become a world ruler. If the child left home he would become a universal spiritual world leader. His father later on isolated him in his palace which was separate from the world. Siddhartha ventured outside the palace four times, the first time he saw an old man, second time he saw a sick man, then a corpse, and finally on the fourth time he saw a holy man. Siddhartha understood that every living thing experiences old age, sickness, and death and that only a religious life offers a refuge from this inevitable suffering. After seeing all of that Siddhartha decided to spend his life searching for religious truth and an end to life's suffering. After his son's birth he left the palace and wandered through the forests of India for six years seeking enlightenment, or wisdom. He tried many ways of reaching an enlightened state, he first debated with other religious seekers, then he fasted (only eating six grains of rice a day), Finally he decided none of these methods brought him to the truth and he continued to suffer. Finally he sat in meditation under a large fig tree and after 49 days of meditation, he achieved an understanding of what was the cause of suffering in this world. Buddha means the "enlightened one".

Buddhism has many significant symbols that are well known throughout the world. One of the main symbols is a Buddha statue. His statues are carved to represent how he looked during his enlightenment. However, the Buddha is sometimes seen laying on his right side to represent his last moments before death, where his cycle of rebirth was broken.

Elephant statues are commonly viewed as a symbol of Buddhism as well. There's a legend that Siddhartha Gautama's mother was told by Brahmin priests that her child would be born a great monarch or Buddha because she dreamt of a silver elephant. Continuing on that legend, there's a tradition that says he "exhibited signs of greatness" because he had the same features as an elephant.

Meditation and fasting are two of the main practices of Buddhists. Those who practice Theravada Buddhism meditate for most of their day and rarely have time to do anything else. Meditating was how Buddha reached enlightenment. He did so to understand the reality he was in. Fasting is also important because it practices self-control. Buddhists have to control their cravings and desires to become wiser.
