I feel that the big idea within my story, "Controlled Damage," is cultural criticism, and the themes of normalized systematic discrimination. The text uses as an example of Viola Desmond's experience as a way to convey the facts that white people had used the "law" as a justification to put down colored people. It highlights how simple of a task it was to manipulate the law in favor of personal biases, which further proves the point of the text being centered around cultural criticism themes.

So far, from Act 1, Scene 1 & 2 I've learned around 1950, Mercy and her daughter Faith had received an invitation from a man representing the prince and princess (they were not yet the king and queen) to work as a cook for them. She denies the offer, mainly due to what British rule had done to their country at the time. Her daughter, shows a different perspective, saying this is not something they should pass up. This shows the big idea can be two things: Colonial (or post-colonial in 2015) as well as, old school vs. new age perspectives.
