The strength of the words give a more dramatic effect; such as in the hangman, words like 'Gallows' or 'hemp' -as in referring to the rope- give a much darker effect than that of their weaker synonyms 'tree/or structure' or 'rope'. Hence, certain words that were used would have a darker connotation. In the lottery, the author used their art of words to create the sense of an eerie calmness or compliance with the idea of sacrifice. Then the author uses progressively darker words as we step closer to the resolution. In both stories, the authors use connotation of words to provide feelings to the reader.

If the characters all teamed up and spoke against the horrible thing that were happening the outcomes would have changed for the better. In the hangman, the hang dude would have left and no more people would have died. In the lottery maybe they would take away the lottery and the girl would not have died.

In the literary works "The Lottery" and "The Hangman" are full of symbols like the black box, and the rope. Each of these symbols symbolize something different. For instance in "The Lottery", there is a black box that people draw names from and the paper with the black dot gets rocks thrown at them till they die. So i would say the black box symbolizes the unknown, i think this because you don't know what is going to happen to you, or if your name has a black dot on it. Also in "The Hangman" there is a rope that people get Hong from. The rope symbolizes death, i think this because everyone who hangs from it dies.

The common theme in both “The Giver” and “The Hangman” are that people need to band together to stop evil. I know this because, in “The Lottery” Tessie was the only one that had stood up to the tradition, but over time, she began to be hurt, and eventually, was a target for rocks; if her peers had worked with her, and she had gotten many people to work with her, she may not’ve turned out dead. In “The Hangman”, the final survivor had assumed he wouldn’t be hanged, but when he came up, it was his turn. Him alone couldn’t stop the hangman, when the first man stood up, nobody followed him. With only one person standing up to him, they had eventually assumed nobody could; proving that the authors intention was to teach that many people need to stand up, not just one person. Overall, both texts prove that one of the many shared themes would be that many people need to stand up to stop the overarching evil.

In both stories one of the main charcters die. There is nothing Tessie could have possibly done not to die because she was the unlucky winner of the lottery. In the story The hangman, the main charter talked to the person hanging people. He was hung for speaking up but if he would have said nothing then he may have lived. In conclusion, both charters could have acted different to save their lives.

The common theme in "the lottery"and in "the hangman" is to speak up for what you believe in because in the lottery it shows that no one spoke up for what is right because Tessy didn't see it untill it was her life at steak. In the hangman it was the same thing when the in the hangman no one stood for the last person in the town because there was no one left to say anything against it.

amber-In the lottery a symbol is the black box. this is because it represents tradition because they do it every year. In the hangman however a symbol is a noose because he was hanging everybody in the town.

In the hangman of they all spoke up together to make a change, not nearly as many people would have died. In the lottery the lottery had been going on for so long and it was normal for them to have the lottery, but if people spoke up and tried to change something then the lottery would stop happening and tessie along with a bunch of other people would not have died. That is how both stories could have ended differently.
