I would probably first realize that Tyler is a student with SEN. He can not easly keep up with other students. He has to learn according to his own speed and needs. I would help him to realize that he is not handicapped, or a total fail. He just needs to realize his own problem and accept it. Then it will be easier to support him.

Donatella Passiatore, ItalyI teach Design and History of Art in a High School. My subject is ideal for responding to Tyler's special educational needs.I would use workshop activities as a priority and make them spy on various pictorial and plastic techniques. For example, explaining Giotto's painting "Lamentation over the Dead Christ", I would make him redraw and paint the various characters with the pictorial graphic technique to the fullest degree, observe the colors of the sky and get into the work making it live together with some of his companions for actively enter the work and understand it. Always together with his companions, listen and draw simple maps on the historical period of the great artist Giotto, a famous artist even praised by the Great Dante Alighieri.

I like Tyler. I realy understand him because i am dyslectic, and my own children are. It is a strugle, even teachers these days, even collegues still don’t see further than read and writefaults.
I fought my entire life against this prejudice. But on the other hand, I think I have a foot for it. I understand what goes on playing the heads of the children. I recognize their problem very quickly and can therefore anticipate quickly. Listen to the children, they often know best for them wath is a pleasant way of working. Sometimes working with a typing program is a solution, others are better off with a tablet, a headphone, less exercises, repetition exercises, expressing a lot of things and especially searching for tricks on the rules. Understand that there is a moment for spelling and reading where extra attention is paid to the spelling and reading. And allow that there are moments where that spelling or reading may be released for a moment, so that there is room for creativity or other skills. Let the children feel that they are not stupid because reading is slow. Read all questions aloud and let the children take notes. If it helps, let them use a finger to read, ... there are countless ways to help, but do not label them as incapable.

I gave him sooooo many extra lessons during this time, because the teachers didn't care about his difficulties. He had to do everything same, than the others.
So I think one of the most important things is to have KNOWLEDGE about dyslexia (as teacher). Then you have to give those children enough time to process new things.
I would give Tyler - and of course other children - the possibility to work in movement... they don't always have to be on their seats.

Treat the dyslexic student naturally - he's a student just like any other; only, dyslexic. You should use direct, clear and objective language when speaking to him. Many dyslexics have difficulty understanding a (very) symbolic, sophisticated, and metaphorical language - using short, concise sentences when passing instructions. Speak looking straight at him. This helps a lot. Enriches and encourages communication. Bring it close to the board and the teacher's desk, as it may favor dialogue, facilitate follow-up, facilitate orientation, and build and strengthen new links.

Always check discreetly if he or she demonstrates that you are understanding your exposure. Does he have doubts about what is being the subject of his class? Repeat as often as necessary and give examples if necessary.

Make sure that the instructions for certain tasks have been understood. What, when, where, how, with what, with whom, at what time, etc. Do not save time to see if it is really clear to the student what is expected of him.

Observe discreetly if he made the notes of the picture and correctly before deleting it. Dyslexia has a different rhythm than non-dyslexics, so avoid subjecting it to time pressure or competition with colleagues.

See if he's integrating with colleagues. Generally the dyslexic attracted sympathies among the companions. Their qualities and abilities are valued, which favors the relationship. However, his inability to do certain school activities (double-proofing, group work, etc.) may lead his classmates to reject it at such times. The teacher should avoid situations that show this fact. With due distance, discreetly and respectfully, it should contribute to the insertion of the dyslexic into the class-group.

Encourage, encourage, make you believe in yourself, feel strong, capable, and secure. The dyslexic always has a history of frustrations, sufferings, humiliations and feelings of worthlessness, for which the school has made a significant contribution. It is therefore up to this same school, to help it to redeem its dignity, to strengthen its ego, (ri) to build its self-esteem. Suggest "tips," "shortcuts," "ways to do", "associations" ... to help you remember, perform activities, or solve problems. Do not ask him to do things in front of his colleagues, to leave him in the limelight: mostly read aloud.

Kids with this Lexia (as Tyler said) needs more time to figure out what other kids do that in a short time. So we can give him more time to understand the course we teach, we also could prepare him for the lesson before teaching it in the classroom. We also can focus on key points, key words for every lesson in order to involve Tyler and to give him the chance to feel the success. In cases like Tyler's and not only, we should make the lesson more interesting using multi sensory approach. Teaching is the art of giving info and make learning a story of success for every student. Lessons should be made using all our senses. We should use color markers, computer games, powerpoints and of course internet activities!

They are many things: the use of the calculator for mathematical activities, the use of computers with the automatic corrector for writing activities, the use of texts written with a highly readable font, with very clean and essential graphics, the use of concept maps for study or versions of texts with audio recordings. Beyond all these measures, we have to find a personal and suitable way for the student to feel comfortable, taking care to give positive reinforcements when he makes some progress, sensitizing the classmates on the problem concerning the boy and the use of tools that he can use, finding methods that go well in general for the class, in order to make it familiar some instruments to the class routines.

In the classrooms of every school, I think, a lot of children has the same situation as Tyler, and the today diversity is one of the challenge that teachers and parents have to face. First of all, in Tyler's case we see his strong necessity to have enough time in disposal in order to obtain his result, to have some breaks during homeworks otherwise he will never win over his dislexia. Secondly, teacher should spur him and helping to have a look on materials feeling him sured. Also, teacher could reduce him the amount of execrsices relative to classe . Sometimes, teachers and parents are not enough patient. Last, teacher should exploit his good abilities in class, entrusting him tasks where could feel realised

In order to facilitate him I would use pens with different colours for the different stages. Especially, for the problem's data I would use a red pen, for the asked information I would use a green pen. That way could help him understand in a better way the strucrure of the problem and it could help him create a strategie of solving it in some way.
I would speak at least once a month with Tyler, in particular, to know how he feels about his learning in different subjects, and what he effectively needs. Monitorization and direct communication seems to be very important to know if ours activities, methodologies and resources are really suitable for the individual. There is not "recipe" for students with dyslexia, the "recipe" must be daily designed for the person who "lives" in this student.

Before entering into the merits of the question, I have to underline the fact that in previous videos concerning dyslexic students I saw that there was a very low numerical ratio between teachers and students, one to one ratio, one teacher for each student or one to four , that is, two teachers for about 8 students. In Italy, where I work, we have a teacher for 18/27 pupils and among these we can also have 3/4 students with dyslexia or other LD and 3/4 other students with poor linguistic knowledge of Italian. It becomes more complicated. Of course you can use the same strategies for all the students and so the problem is bypassed, but it remains quite different.
That said, I work at primary school. The guy in the video is great. Below I write what strategies I use with my dyslexic children and / or with other LDs at primary school. My LD children always follow the class program.
First of all, I always start with a GAME to present a mathematics topic, so that children can move, feel motivated, involved, protagonists. Children with LD work very well in games.
Then I resume the subject dramatizing very much and then using verbal, non-verbal and motor techniques. Their attention lasts a bit longer.
I use large / small objects to make a more concrete experience closer and closer to the abstract content on which they have to practice.
In these moments I always suggest that I work in a small group where all my children can experiment with peer tutoring (obviously LD children too). During the more formal work, in the moments of frontal teaching that I try to limit as much as possible, I let the LD children use the discharge-tension objects if they need them. During the practical work they can go out and go to the bathroom or take a walk without having to ask me, as long as they go out one at a time.

In the work on the notebook I use already prepared procedural schemes, maps and tables for the grammar work and for the mathematical formulas, concept maps for the study disciplines. Concept maps can also be used in both written and oral tests. The form is also hung and colored in the classroom. Very often the maps are projected on the IWB and are available to everyone. I also often use games for cmputer designed in such a way as to be short, give immediate reinforcement, support motivation and concentration. They are specific programs for LD students but I use them for all children.

A structured reading scheme that involves repetition and introduces new words slowly is extremely important. This allows the child to develop confidence and self esteem when reading.

Don’t ask pupils to read a book at a level beyond their current skills, this will instantly demotivate them. Motivation is far better when demands are not too high, and the child can actually enjoy the book. If he has to labour over every word he will forget the meaning of what he is reading.

Save the dyslexic child the ordeal of having to ‘read aloud in class’. Reserve this for a quiet time with the class teacher. Alternatively, perhaps give the child advanced time to read pre-selected reading material, to be practiced at home the day before. This will help ensure that the child is seen to be able to read out loud, along with other children

Real books should also be available for paired reading with an adult, which will often generate enthusiasm for books. Story tapes can be of great benefit for the enjoyment and enhancement of vocabulary. No child should be denied the pleasure of gaining access to the meaning of print even if he cannot decode it fully.

Remember reading should be fun.

Link about helpingstudent with dyslexia

https://www.dyslexic.com/blog/helping-your-student-with-dyslexia-learn-5-strategies-to-rely-on/

In my opinion, with students like Tyler, first of all it is important to potentiate his strengths, that is verbal skills and artistic abilities so that he could become more and more confident. I have worked with a lot of students with dyslexia and they often feel themselves different and demotivated. They must be continually encouraged and it's important to give them some tasks they are able to carry out so that they can show to the other students their abilities and be appreciated. For example they could present on the interactive board a project they have prepared at home using a lot of pictures, captions, colours. Or they can work on songs, role plays, school plays.

For Tyler, I would use strategies to capitalize on his verbal and artistic skills. To learn, I would make materials using colors and many images and I would ask them to respond more orally and not in writing. Solving themes in writing could be done electronically, not with the pen or pencil. But sometimes I would ask him to draw to capitalize on his artistic side. I would also propose to him to solve more difficult problems, but I would take care to give him support by breaking them into sub-problems that he can solve more easily and faster: thus, he would gain self-confidence and gain good results.

It can be useful to register the lessons for example, or to create a video with all the students at the end of a project, which reassume all the contents of the project. I think it would be helpful for him to watch it and repeat it, but also for every student in the class, because in order to create such videos it’s required a huge work and study about the topic. Plus, I’m sure it would be fun for everyone to learn to make videos. I would also give him more time to do tasks, but for sure I would let him do oral tests instead of written one when possible.

In work with a child with dyslexia, one should be consistent, persistent and patient; I would more often approach him, use different teaching tools and aids, I would work with him with supplementary content in which the difficulties were most pronounced. Regarding the checking of knowledge and homework I would adjust the timing of the work, occasionally I would give him easier tasks that could be solved successfully, I would break a harder task to subdivide, give it a more thorough preparation before grading, I would more often use the checking method knowledge that suits him more and I would more often check the level of knowledge and skills adoption as a motivating factor.

Mark his work not his handwriting. Divide lesson is smaller sections and allow him to do it in his own time. If he needs a break he can take a break.
The only problem I can see is the part with moving arround. Therefore, first of all, I would give him additional time both for classwork and for homework, scheduling well in advance his assessment tests and performances. As a teacher of a foreign language, I know how difficult it is for dyslexic students to learn a second language, so I usually adopt specific teaching strategies for them. In Tyler’s case, I would mainly use online activities and games for grammar and vocabulary, I would have him create coloured mind maps or picture vocabulary banks (to exploit his artistic vein), and for communication, I would have him learn stock sentences of situational language to act out with his classmates.

What benefits him the most is extra time to complete work or review lesson PPT at his leisure.
I would use note templates where what is covered is already written on a paper for him broken into small chunks and missing some key words. This will help him from becoming overwhelmed or felling rushed. All he needs is to listen for blanks and can review later. If the severity of his dyslexia makes even this difficult for him to complete in class. The not templates could be sent in advanced so he can prepare before class and have his mentioned breaks when he needs, to be able to fully absorb the meanings and be ready to listen effectively for the key aspects which are left blank.

By using a multi-sensory approach, his attention can be maintained. Chunking and adding meaning to aid with memory and using visual, auditory and kinetic aids will enhance his learning experiences. Most of all, Tyler needs to feel that he is successful with his own learning and moving forward. He has incredible spoken language skills and can use this to help him achieve his goals. Maybe by recording his thoughts and ideas initially and then reviewing what he has said when writing his ideas.

Using his spoken language skills I would use a speech recognition software with a computer so that he could keep the pace with the rest of the classroom in taking notes and not being focused on taking writing notes at class, and at home he could review and at his pace review the topics saved and write it down. I agree with using a recorder for him to record his ideas and when at home he can review them. I think that he needs to be estimulated all the time so a digital enviroment can make him explore the subject proposed by the teacher and explore the digital presentation that the teacher shared with him, instead of having to write something down on a diary.

Because he has artistic skills the storytelling based on story maps or Dixid cards and role playing could be good. He can listen the story by the computer and tick the right answer on the sheet. The sheet I will prepare with big letter and more space between the words. I will use teh colours to teach grammar and drawings to teach spelling. He can also draw the story by himself. I will give him the tablet or laptop and he can do wiritting. And I will give him more time to do tasks. To learn the poem I will try to use music. If he likes he can sing it.

Tyler said that he had difficulty with timing and keeping up with his other friends in the classroom. He is worried about the lessons where he needs to take notes and says that the teacher tells him to hurry up. First of all, I would give Tyler a list of target words of the unit that he can practice throughout the unit. I would definitely prepare a Quizlet link of the target words which is a perfect program for spelling. I would prepare a box filled with kinetic sand where he can practice writing the target words. Kinetic sand is perfect for students like him since they can feel the word while writing it on the sand. I would prepare the worksheets in different ways for him. He could have fill in the blanks activities where he needs to take notes of small chunks of words or just target words.

The whole class will have the material to study at home, but Tyler’s one could be adapted to its needs with reduction of redundant elements, graphic explanations, coloured highlightings, etc. In this way, Tyler would have the time to review it as many times and for as long as he needs to feel comfortable with it. That would also prevent his sense of inadequacy, and perhaps he would be able to keep up with “the number of butterflies caught” It could be also advisable to provide him with a tablet or a computer to write with the aid of appropriate facilities.

Many people associate dyslexia with the switching of letters in a word, it's a reading disorder that extends beyond simple letter conversion. Students who have this learning disability also have difficulty in recognizing characters, learning the sounds of letters and even identifying words that rhyme. As students get older, they may exhibit other signs of dyslexia, such as difficulty spelling and delayed language development. So, teaching method involves techniques such as clapping syllables to help the students better segment words into their components, or phonemes. It also focuses on connecting sounds to their symbols (letters) in two ways: visually, through reading, and auditorily, through spelling. This approach uses a systematic and cumulative progression of learning, meaning that lessons logically connect and build on each other.

Like Tyler says, let´s give him time and space! It would make sense to encourage the student effort so that he will continue to do well. To do so, we should recognize his persistence and providing an open and empathetic attitude. That should take place in a multi sensorial environment, in which the students needs, even physicals, are embraced with appropriate activities. Some resources available to help Tyler strengthen his confidence in both writing and spelling and commit correct spellings to memory.
• y.com – Nessy offers a range of PC games that help learners understand the sounds that make up words – an area where dyslexics particularly struggle. Their colorful, cartoony style is appealing and engaging to kids.
• Dyslexiagames.com – The workbooks available here are full of puzzles, 3D drawings, and reading activities, tailored to dyslexic learners’ strength: visual thinking.
• Simplex Spelling – If you have iPads in your classroom, the apps in the Simplex Spelling series are an excellent choice. They help build up students’ understanding of phonics and how words are constructed. The series placed 3rd in the 2012 Best App Ever Awards – Best Elementary Student App.

I personally use the Verdana .
Moreover I would give Tyler a sheet containing key information that he’ ll be covering throughout the lesson and blank out key words.

Choosing activities
It is necessary to be attentive to what will be proposed to the little one, but for that to happen in fact, nothing better than to know the taste of the child. There are those that are more linked to electronic games and others more linked to music, for example. Either way, there will always be the ideal alternative for each.

- Classes sung

It is already well known that music is an important ally in the treatment of various evils. After all, it is responsible for the unlocking of the nervous system, for the performance in the cardiopulmonary system, among other areas of the body.

According to studies, the link between dyslexia and music is in the following fact: there is a transfer of abilities present in the cerebral rhythm, which contributes to the ability to differentiate sounds. With this, the child can begin to read correctly, according to the phonemes picked up by the little one.

The singing lessons are important because of that. However, it is important that there is follow-up with speech-language pathologists so that the result is even more satisfactory. The work with the phonemes is necessary and the role of the professional is there to work this competence.

- Electronic games

The use of electronic games as an alternative to lessen the effects of dyslexia is also a great idea. Games are responsible for giving more attention to the little ones.

A survey published in the journal Current Biology showed that action games induced children to have both improved speed and reaction time, which improved reading.

Of course in the school environment you need to measure the intensity of the games. However, as a complement to pedagogical activities, games can be great allies.

- School Activities in Electronic Devices

Many schools use electronic devices to broadcast some supplemental content. In this case, it is not about games, but really content pragmatic and that belongs to the curriculum of the child.

Tablets, for example, are widely used for this purpose. They rely on many activities that provide the child's knowledge. It is always valid to emphasize that the accompaniment of the educator should be frequent.

- Word Search, Hangman and Crossword

The activities that were part of our childhood are still special. Word-of-mouth, forca, and cross-words remain effective for working children's abilities and helping them lessen the effects of dyslexia in their lives.

For students like Tyler in I propose to use the computer, to carry out much of their written work. With regard to reading, opt or by recording audio with reading, paused, or by a person to read to you, calmly. Sometimes reading is accompanied by images, for a better understanding of the information contained in the text. For all tasks you are given more time. Never ask for tasks involving writing long texts, these are exchanged for tasks involving orality and the use of supports with pictures and diagrams, for example, in the power point. I also teach study techniques that are more favorable to you, especially in the more theoretical subjects. The use of schemas, keywords associated with the image. I also argue that the evaluation of these students should not include instruments that draw heavily on writing, that spelling mistakes and syntax, should not be valued, that clues should be used with color and, for each class, provide material, with features, to help you keep up with the class. Always a multisensory approach.

Reading and immediate comprehension of a text are the main problem for a dyslexic student (as Tyler), who often experiences a feeling of inadequacy.Compensatory instruments, both high and low-tech ones, are useful to compensate students' difficulties and to enhance their skills and potentials. When they are used effectively, individually and strategically, they become fundamental to accompany the boys in a path of autonomy. It is important to use compensatory tools, in particular digital resources (textbooks, schemes and tables prepared) that are easily usable through the use of the PC. But it is not enough to provide a PC to the student to be able to say that he has provided a compensatory tool.Their use must however be integrated with the study path, other individualized and personalized strategies and a welcoming and serene group context.
