As well as the fact that not everyone needs to go to college right away. I initially did a year of college after high school, knew I wasn't ready, and took two years off before going back to finish my undergrad. I was much better for it and learned a lot during that two year gap. There is no need to rush through that phase of life.

Something that resonated with me was the idea of conformity of education - the "fast food" model and how detrimental that is to people doing what it is that they want to do vs what they feel they "should" do on that linear, standardized model.

I agree our students have hidden dreams that we should value, nurture and guide mindfully. We need to provide opportunities for learning, self discovery and critical thinking that reaches the whole but focuses on the individual.

Creating the learning environments in which students can connect, question, change and grow - in other words, FLOURISH! - is a way to ensure deep, meaningful learning.

1. What resonates with me: transformation vs. reformation, the idea of education as being linear, passion for what you do and allowing students to feel the passion for what they are doing in school by personalizing their experiences 2. I agreed with all of what he said though I think sometimes school districts do not have the resources ie. smaller class sizes would make it easier to individualize students experiences. His focus on the whole student and their dreams being laid at the feet of educators was very powerful and is something I hope to keep in mind when working with students

What resonated: the concept that education often dislocates individuals from their natural talents was powerful. I feel that there are far too many people who feel that that school is a waste of their time. Even worse, some feel that they are "not smart" or not capable largely due to standardized test scores (often unconnected to classes student take) or lack of success in topics they are told are "important" and must be taken every year. For example, math is required constantly during k-12 in most schools. If students do not thrive in math, they are often given more math at the expense of exposure to other experiences that might better align to their talents or personal joy.
Where I agree: most of what he said appears to make common sense to me. However, I wonder if schools have the will, vision and resources to make these sweeping changes. I'm particularly concerned based on the current attacks on public education (i.e. banning books, attacks on teachers for teaching topics related to race, gender, etc.) and to what extent educators can make effective changes under these circumstances. I hope we have the courage and vision to do so.
