Hiro Wang

Jack Symons’s Maconochie’s tin - A tin that expresses the feelings of many WW1 soldiers

Inside the reusable Maconochie’s tin (a widely used food ration for British soldiers during WW1), lies letters, photos, and personal belongings of Jack Symons, a fictional British soldier who had died on the 9th of January, 1915, fighting the Germans on the front. All of the components within the artifact was carefully thought through and crafted by artist, Hiro Wang, in order to allow the students and teachers of grade 10 to have a better understanding how the average WW1 soldier’s view of the war changed as battles progressed.

Wang believes that the average soldier during that time had three distinct views on the war; one before battle, during battle, and after battle (in the trenches). Before the battle, majority of the volunteers who enlisted, viewed war as an adventure and a place where patriotism, courage, and heroism could be proudly shown. He does have a valid reason for this claim: “Soldiers had this type of view on the war because the propaganda posters made them think that way by painting a false image.” These young, lively men were gripped by patriotic fervor and sought escape from grim conditions at home. However, as soldiers battled in the front, they quickly realized that war wasn’t some fun adventure or place that had better living conditions than home. Life in the trenches took a toll on the soldiers both physically and mentally, and their view on the war had changed almost immediately. This claim made by Wang is reliable , as it can be supported by the millions of letters sent home from the front. Finally, after the soldiers had battled and experienced the real horrors of war, many soldiers questioned the war and had feelings of resentment towards high officers and war ministers, the ones that made the wrong people do the fighting. Wang believes major events such as the christmas truce help support the soldiers’ third view of the war.

By carefully reading and viewing the artifacts inside of what Jack Symons, a fictional soldier that represented other innocent lives during WW1, the audience can connect to “the average soldier” on a personal level to get a better understanding of the disturbing yet interesting phycological cycle soldiers went though.

It explores how the average trench soldiers' view on the war changed as trench warfare progressed.

</del>
Within the mail sent home from the front,, there will be an art piece from a quote from the book "All Quiet on the Eastern Front". "A declaration of war should be a kind of popular festival with entrance-tickets and bands, like a bull fight. Then in the arena the ministers and generals of the two countries, dressed in bathing-drawers and armed with clubs, can have it

out among themselves. Whoever survives, his country wins. That would be much simpler and more just than this arrangement, where the wrong people do the fighting" (21)

Why I chose this topic?

Recently, I have been watching a lot of WW1 documentaries on youtube and reading a novel on soldiers on the Western front. I began noticing a common trend that many soldiers went in and came out of the war with very different views on it [the war], and from there, I began to wonder, “What made millions of soldiers willingly volunteer for the war and then suddenly want to opt. out of it for peace?” I choose to do this topic as I am very interested in researching this physiological cycle that the majority of soldiers seemed to go through at the time.

Why I believe my questions are important?

My inquiry question is important as I believe it if focuses on a topic that has not been talked about enough and therefore has not been fully answered. The question allows us to have a better understanding of the emotions and perspectives of soldiers during specific time frames of WW1, and again, reminds us of the detrimental effects war had on soldiers’ lives.

I believe that the average soldier during that time had three distinct views on the war; one before battle, during battle, and after battle. Therefore, I dedicated each of my 3 supporting questions to each of these time frames. This was my thought process when I came up with my supporting question: What made millions of soldiers want to volunteer in the war during that time? - Propaganda posters. Propaganda posters were used to make men think of the war in a certain way, so that means the views soldiers had on the war must have been illustrated on the propaganda posters. With this question, I am able to narrow down my research.

My second supporting question is very straightforward. It is important as it allows me to focus on a crucial primary source.

Finally, my third supporting question is important, as it focuses on a controversial topic of soldiers questioning the war at the time.

Possible Artifacts?

A museum video that shows the phycological cycle of soldiers joining and getting out of the war.

That took up the rest of the block.

I feel like I am on the right track and I am clear on what to do with my project, which is a good sign.

I took a lot of time today, knowing what I want for the final exhibit. Originally, my plan was to create an art piece to show how a soldier's view on war changes after he's fought in it, however, I did not feel like it covered the whole topic that I am researching. Therefore, I decided that I will create a museum video, ones that you see in a museum, so that I can put all of my research and findings in it. I found some good links that I can follow as examples, and I was able to come up with an idea to tie all of the similar projects together.

Now, I really need to focus on doing research. I am planning on doing research for homework, so that I can start on my project as soon as possible.

As planned on Thursday, I found a ton of primary sources that answers my supporting questions. However, now, with all of this information, I need to somehow piece it all together and create the narration for the video that I am creating. For homework, I will begin writing the script for the narration over the video, and also I will start looking for pictures and videos online that show what I am saying. By the end of Wednesday, I hope to have the complete script for my narration, and part of the video, so that I can record it, make it into a video, print everything to get ready for the exhibition.

Part 2:

After spending a solid 2 minutes thinking of my decision, I decided to change my project, as I felt that a museum video does not leave a big enough impact on the audience. Because

I have decided that my artifact would be a mail sent from the Western front to home by a fictional character named Jack Symons. All of the artifacts, which will be relavent to that time will be put into a army ration tin in order to show my findings from the research.

I worked on writing this fictional character's letter to home today in class. This letter is very special, as it actually contains bits and pieces of writing from actual soldiers during world war one. In this letter, Jack Symons, the British soldier writes about how his view on war had changed from the beginning of the war to the present and reflects on it. The emotions in the letter is meant to reflect the emotions that the average soldier went through at the time, in other words, it reflects what I researched.

I have written the letter, and now, I need to focus on finding the other things that will be put into the tin, which are photos and personal belongings of the soldier.

Things that I still need to do

- Placard
