PYD contexts that are found outside of the school environment can be applied to family, school and community settings. These contexts can help support the adolescent in many broad range of developmental assets including self-control, interpersonal skills, problem-solving, the quality of their peer and adult relationships, commitment to schooling and academic achievement. When an adolescent is able to advance in social and emotional competencies than it is associated with less social and academic adjustment. Even associated with fewer behavior problems and emotional distress.
Source:
Kuther, T. L. (2021). Adolescence in context. SAGE Publications, Inc.

Within these interventions in school both students and adults are able to learn and be able to apply knowledge skills and be able to gain attitudes that enhance personal development, social relationships, ethical behavior and productive work. School based intervention focuses on interrelated cognitive, emotional and behavioral competencies that are important in order to gain success in schools and even life. Students are able to learn about self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision making.
Source:
Kuther, T. L.

"We believe in the potential of young women and the ability to restore choice. Through nurturing relationships and challenging experiences young women and their families discover hope, passion and perseverance in the face of life's adversity".
-Discovery Ranch's Mission Statement

Discovery Ranch is a program that is placed at a residential treatment center for teen girls. This program focuses on modeling, mentoring and motivating girls through a positive relationship approach. They do this through a unique blend of traditional and experiential therapy (equine therapy). Discovery Ranches helps teach girls how to recognize and regulate emotions and behaviors by performing their main experiential therapy which is working with horses. Their main philosophy is focusing on not shunning girls away from life's difficulties. Instead, this program focuses on putting opportunities in front of them so that they can face their challenge and to then be able to grow their own strengths.
Source:
Residential Treatment Program for Teen Girls Ages 13-17.
How does this program benefit the adolescent?

Task Completion: When the girls are first introduced to this program they will be given a task that they must complete. They must learn how to take care of the horses and learn how to ride. This task completion provides a risk where girls are forced to learn how to complete this task. This is due to working with horses. If horses are not feed or taken care of possible harm could be caused on them. It forces the girls to make this task and complete in which case they learn this skill.
-Rule Following: Many girls who come to this program struggle with following basic rules of society as well as authority. Though, when they work with horses they are forced to follow rules due to the danger they could put themselves in with working with this animal. It forces these girls on developing a skill of ruling following due to the possible consequences that could occur.
-Express Emotion: After every task is complete every girl must express their emotions and feelings. This forces the girls to learn how to express what they are feeling. This can help them in the real world to not bottle up emotions and learn how to deal with them.
Develop Social Skills: Many girls within the program may try to hide their emotions or struggle with recognizing them. The horse that the girls work with do the complete opposite. Horses will instead mirror what the girls are hiding with their emotions. With the help of the horse professional and therapist, seeing her feelings reflected in the horse’s behavior will help your daughter to better understand her own behavior. Because horses respond positively to appropriately assertive behavior, working with the horse can help your daughter to practice these behaviors. She will learn the difference between assertiveness and aggressiveness.
-Cognitive Abilities: Horses sense danger and respond with heightened awareness of their surroundings. Horses can even often flee if they sense danger. By working with horses, girls will have to practice remaining calm and taking responsibility of his or her own thoughts. They can discuss with others about how to deal with certain situations or how they are feeling.
-Practicing Activities: Adolescents in this case girls, could sometimes avoid situations that seem too hard or too stressful. Though, with this program they can choose activities that are outside their own skill level. They can then be assisted as well as can discuss how they are doing throughout the activity. These activities could not only insist on riding the horse but, as well with lunging, bathing and feeding the horse. These activities require coordination, planning and active communication.
-Activity Scheduling: Planning or developing a schedule to care for a horse throughout the day can teach the girls a sense of responsibility as well as flexibility due to the physical needs of the horse changing all the time.
-Play Therapy and Story Telling: Play therapy allows for the adolescents to be able to create relationships and set limits. Story telling encourages adolescents to develop stories about what the adolescent is thinking and conveying emotions. This can be used to develop language skills and creativity.
-Group Bonding: Equine therapy teaches adolescents especially girls how to work with a partner or group. With a horse, one learns the idea of patience as well as communication.
Source:
Residential Treatment Program for Teen Girls Ages 13-17. Horses are prey animals which makes them observe and react strongly to their environment especially people around them. This is an act of survival for the horse. Therefore, when someone is angry, afraid, or holding back their emotions, the horse will sense that and react. Horses react negatively to aggressiveness, hostility, or coldness. A horse may react to a person with a negative attitude by shying away from the person or stubbornly refusing to follow the person’s commands. For example, if a horse were to become difficult it can be used as talking point in how the girl can thus get through that difficult situation with it. As well as can guide the difficult teen in learning how to problem solve. It forces the girls while working with the horses how to recognize their emotions. As well as working with horses that can be scary at first to most girls can help the girls learn how to overcome fears as well as build confidence in themselves. Girls can also learn how to develop the emotion of empathy by working with the horse as well as learning how to recognize their emotions. Girls that struggle in relationships can let their guard down. Unlike human beings, horses have no preconceived notions about people which makes it easier for people to let their guard down. Your daughter will be more likely to open up emotionally and express her inner feelings and thoughts. This emotional openness allows youth to be able to grow and the therapy is most effective.Lastly, girls learn how to deal with life situations no matter how large or intimidating.
Source:
Residential Treatment Program for Teen Girls Ages 13-17.

This theory focuses on adolescents in how they learn through observing others. They learn consequences from watching others as well. This theory can be seen throughout the program. Girls are able to get proper models of behavior through the professional staff. As well as girls learn from their horse as well as other girls in the programs consequences of actions. Thus, making them learn not to do a specific action because they learned the consequence from the others.
Source:
Kuther, T. L. (2021). Adolescence in context.

Resilience is: "The ability to respond or perform positively in the face of adversity, to achieve despite the presence of disadvantages, or to significantly exceed expectations given poor home, school, and community circumstances" (Masten, 2016, cited in Kuther, 2021, pg. 261).
Adaptation: "Part of the resilience process; interaction between developmental capacities and context, including risk and protective factors" (Masten &Moon, 2015 and Ungar, 2015 cited in Kuther, 2021, p. 261).
Discovery Ranch allows girls to be able to be removed from risk factors and have protective factors. Therefore, girls are able to learn the idea of resilience when working with a horse. When they can't complete a task with a horse they are forced to talk it out with the instructor and therapist. It helps them learn this skill. As well as learn how to adapt in certain situations when a horse isn't quite working with them in what task they want to complete.
Source:
Kuther, T. L.

This program helps with adolescent's ability which is forming during this time period to control and stop responding to a stimulus. When working with a horse one must learn how to respond accordingly which the girls learn in the program. Adolescents also are developing their knowledge of how the mind works and ability to control the mind. This consists of increasing awareness of personal thought process. As well as gaining the ability to choose and apply appropriate startegies. Discovery Ranch allows the girls to develop in these traits. Girls are having to discuss their feelings by having to recognized them and develop how to control them while on an animal. As well as learning how to apply what strategy when working with a horse. The program also helps learning to occur. By working with horses it forces the girls to pay attention. They are then challenged by having to do the work of the horse all on their own. After, each task when asked about their emotions about an experience they just had helps makes that connections from existing information. Through riding they are able to have enough examples and non-examples to create a rich schemata for themselves.
Source:
Kuther, T. L. (2021). Adolescence in context.

This study was done by researchers Hauge, Kvalem, Berget, Enders-Slegers and Braastad.

Within this study participants were adolescents between 12 and 15 years with an average age of 13.5 years participated. A total of around eighteen adolescent girls participated within this study.

Within the study the adolescents were taught relational and task-specific skills with the horse. "The relational skills consisted of being able to handle and communicate with the horse both on the ground and through riding" (8). The task-specific skills consisted of properly putting the tack on the horses and other basic horsemanship skills. The adolescents also had riding lessons and instructions conducted by the instructors which were equine professionals. The instructors helped and provided intervention if needed. Though, the adolescents were given time to try these multiple tasks on their own due to the focus on the study being on the experienced less on the actual performance level of the adolescents.

Results of the study:
-Within the study the researchers found that social contact with the horse, instructor and other adolescents increased the participants' perception of social support during the time of the study's intervention when compared to a control group.
-The results of the study proved to the researchers that working with horses within this specific intervention has perceived social support emerge as a "main psychological factor" (12).

Why is social support so important for adolescents? How does the horse relate to social support?
According to the study, social support is "information leading to the subject believing that she is cared for and loved, esteemed and valued and belonging to a network of communication and mutual understanding" (3). Social support can be a protective factor that protects adolescents from difficulties in their life. Social support is also derived from relationships. When relationships are created basic needs can be fulfilled for adolescents. Due to the increase of social support within this study, proves that an animal can create a sense of this connectedness and belonging that social support provides. Animals can serve as "social facilitators" and serve as a "catalyst to human-human contact" (3). The horse responds through its behavior and reacts to people's emotions when they work with them. It provides a direct response to the emotional state of that person. By this interaction, it can provide the adolescence with a feeling of intimacy which is apart of the experience of social support. By forming this connectedness with this horse can be important to how the adolescent develops within and recognizes social support. This can be very beneficial towards the adolescent in their growing abilities within their adolescent states.
Source:
Hauge, H., Kvalem, I.

This study examined a three-month equine-assisted learning program and how it improved character skills within adolescents. This study was done in a specialized secondary school for youth that struggled with mainstream curriculum. This study was done in 2013 and 75 students underwent this specific intervention while 85 other adolescents did not (control group). A study was later done within one year later at the same school though only 58 students underwent the intervention while 59 students did not (control group).
What the study found:
The study found an increase in Habits of Mind scores across the three semesters that observed over the two years that the study was done. The study also found an association between rate of change in character skills and grade point average across the semesters that were studied.
Source:
Ho, N. F., Zhou, J., Fung, D.
How do you as a teacher or administrator get this program implemented within your community? It's just six simple steps!

1. Ask yourself as a teacher or administrator if it is a common theme within your school to have girls that are typically labeled "at risk". If so ask yourself whether they have any type of program implemented in the school or community outreach programs. If not then move on to the next step. Even if there is a program ask yourself if it meeting the standards for positive youth development.
2. You must bring it up to the school administration staff and school board. Show them the benefits of this program in which you have learned within this Padlet (especially use the logic flow model to help you!)
3. After, approval by the school board get all resources mentioned within logic flow model. This contains the necessary people that makes the program function. This can include the chef, equine instructor, clinical professional, horses and more. These resources not only the human resources but, the physical resources such as the ranch itself. While getting all the resources check to make sure you are meeting all of the Habits of Minds.
Source: Ho, N. F., Zhou, J., Fung, D. S., & Kua, P. H. (2017). Equine-assisted learning in youths at-risk for school or social failure. Cogent Education, 4(1), 1334430. https://doi.org/10.1080/2331186x.2017.1334430
4. Get specific. Meaning while working in the classroom or throughout the school look for girls that are considered "at risk" or just having a hard time coping within the school system. According to research the term "at risk", means "a child or adolescent who faces extreme threats to a successful transition into adulthood". Some characteristics to look at for in "at risk" girls would be truancy, lack of interest in academics, and even having a disconnection from the school environment.
Source: What Are Youth At-Risk and What Can You Do to Help? Rawhide Youth Services. (2021, April 14). https://www.rawhide.org/blog/teen-issues/youth-at-risk/#:~:text=In%20the%20broadest%20sense%2C%20a,disconnection%20from%20the%20school%20environment.
5. Get educated. Ask for other teachers who have the students and get knowledgeable about their home life. If you feel comfortable ask their parents. Have the parents take the assessment located on the Discovery Ranch website or make your own that is similar. Look at the assessment on the website for help.
6. Let the program be known. Discuss with the parents and other members of the school community about how this program will help that specific student. Also, just let it be known to the whole population of the school community that his program exists so that even if unnoticed girls can still attend if they want to.
7. Let the program continue. Keep notifying girls, families and the school community about this program. It will allow the continuation of the program and have it continuing helping girls. Make sure the program keeps in good numbers due to it being in the girls benefit. It has been proven that in this specific intervention if the girls work with not only the horses but, with the other girls it improves the more likely good of social contact. Social contact can be a protective factor that helps protect adolescents from the difficulties in their life which is one of the main purposes of this intervention in the first place. Ask at ranches, non-profits, the city hall and more. It doesn't have to be just a school program which is clearly demonstrated at Discovery Ranch.

This is a framework created by Karen Pittman that provides articulate principles and practices that help communities foster optimal youth development.
-Services: These are things TO or FOR young people to enhance and foster well-being of the adolescent. These services can include:

adequate housing

safety from physical and psychological harm

specialized services, when necessary

food and nutrition

access to health care

instruction in reading, writing and computing

It's important to note that adolescents are the ones receiving these services.
-Opportunities: These are done by the adolescents themselves. Though, opportunities allow the adolescents to be able to explore, express, earn, belong and influence. Some of the most main types of opportunities are towards active learning or decision making roles\responsibilities.
It is important to not that adolescents are the actors and not the recipients of opportunities.
-Supports: These are things done with adolescents. It is the idea that adolescents are able to take full advantage of the services and opportunities provided. There are three types of support which are emotional, motivational and strategic.
It is important to note that adolescents are partners with supports.
Source:
Positive Youth Development 101 (Manual).
