It should certainly be done carefully to the parents of the students, the parents in fact influence and form the ideas of children.
In a globalized world, we must open ourselves to the other, without fear but rather with curiosity and respect. we must be careful and have respect, accepting different even and especially when we can not understand it. Celebrating diversity, see the other as a resource can support the development of individual skills aimed interculturalism.

Alicia touches upon a tool that can aid us in diffusing some tension around our differences: a little humor. Open discussion of our differences, films, books and art exhibits, projects, all foster a greater knowledge of other cultures. However, the students also LIVE different experiences together, do not always agree, do not always get along and they need some practical help with that. If we have been able to talk about cultural differences, debated the pros and cons even in mock debates, then maybe we can laugh when we just can't agree. Maybe we can create some type of fun ritual to use when we "agree to disagree" - little Italian kids lock pinky fingers and chant "A pox on that little devil that made us fight". It is adorable to watch, because the disagreement is put "outside" of themselves - "the little devil" - and does not represent the entirety of the relationship. Maybe older children can invent other fun rituals. Maybe they can have shoes in the classroom that they can put on and walk around in as a symbol of "walking in another's shoes". Because we also need to accept the fact that there will be some tension or disagreements, and use those moments as an opportunity for growth.

It’s also important to create intercultural laboratories, because students have to work together towards a common goal. I think another way for creating a multicultural environment could be using the language of music.

The intercultural approach is transversal, multidisciplinary and matter of all the teachers in each subject and all classes. The arrival of a foreign child in the classroom is a "fact of life" that calls the teacher to a high level of responsibility, engaging him to renew his methods. It can be said that the various aspects of intercultural education as a unifying motif find an approach aimed at facilitating the relations starting from the recognition of differences, so that we can then encourage the promotion of dialogue and exchange. To prevent intercultural education is reduced to episodic and sporadic moments, I believe that the
cooperative teaching methods are designed to encourage in students greater availability of capacity to the other (meaning the ability to listen, to change opinion, active participation during activities), mutual listening, constructive interaction (helping each other, appreciate the 'contribution that each can give the group work). It is this greater openness and availability that should somehow influence a more general students' attitude towards diversity and thereby making it more "friendly".

The most important thing is to support students in their willing to share their personal experiences as a starting point of view. Then by this sharing students can explore what intercultural activities mean. That is they use their curiosity to learn other “realities” (refugee story, people living in a country oppressed by war) and to see, finally, these new ways of life as an important enrichment to get better. This synergistic way to study all togheter need respect, openmindedness to realize a full integration. As Erika highlights it is important that students understand the importance to respect different ideas although they cannot share all of them.

In my opinion the most challenging aspect to teach, especially to adolescent learners is how to solve conflicts. At that age they could have conflicts for many reasons, anyway a struggle born by cultural differences has to be stopped immediately. I think that there can be many ways to solve conflicts but communication is always the best way in human relationships. In my opinion, communication is something we take for granted. By using cooperative activities, from the very beginning of school years, we have to work in order to achieve team building and class building. When students learn to accept each other and to be enriched by the differences, our work will be more easy and efficient.

In a intercultural classroom the dialog is important, that is the aptitude to speeking and listening by respecting the ideas of other people. This is a challenge because, I think, a student, being a young man, believes it is always correct what he thinks. When a young student listen to ideas that das not know, that das not understand, sometimes, he defends himself or attacks or despises the ideas or the person in front of him. We have to promote the aptitude to tolerance, to accepting the diversity. Inclusion is not identification but acceptation of what we don’t like or we don’t understand.

It is all about accepting others and thinking about what others are going through. Empathy is an important skill, and we teachers need to learn our students how to develop it. One way to make a difficult agenda easier is to add some humor, because a smile always comes back to you :-)
To give and get feedback in a positive atmosphere, to talk about feelings, to work together towards a common goal are all abot encouraging dialogue. And I think that dialougue is one of the most difficult tasks both in the classroom and in the outside world - the new technology drives us to the opposite direction. It is so easy to communicate online instead of doing it live, face to face. When we loose the live contact, we loose something in the dialogue...

First of all we should know students and then offer occasions in which they can know more about themselves and their culture. So organizing cooperative learning works, based on cooperation and discussions, and proposing lessons about different cultures can empower this competence and empathy. I liked one thing mentioned by Erika "They do not need to convince the other, neither to understand all other's ideas.

I think Erika nailed it when she said that " we can't understand everything and we can't always understand or change the way someone thinks and we have to accept that". This is very important. Even if we can't understand we can still respect. That is something we have to teach the students. I think Alicia gave some very valuable practical advice. We have to set the culture in our classroom from the beginning. Making the rules clear. And like Alicia I also believe that empathy can be taught. It is not easy, but with projects where the students have to work together and with dialogue it can be done

The key principle is to get learners to compare the theme in a familiar situation with examples from an unfamiliar context. For instance, the theme of Sport can be examined from many perspectives, including:
Gender - Are there sports that are, in the familiar context or in the unfamiliar context, predominantly played by men or by women? - Are things changing? Age - Are there sports for younger people and older people? Region - Are there local sports? - Do people, including the learners, identify with local teams? -Do some teams have a particular cultural tradition? Religion - Are there religious objections to playing sport, or days when some people choose not to do sport because of religious observance?
Racism - Is this found in spectator sports? - Are the players of foreign teams, or foreign players in local teams always treated with respect? - Are there incidents of racist chants or insults?
Other themes e.g. food, homes, school, tourism, leisure, can receive a similarly critical perspective. Grammatical exercises can reinforce prejudice and stereotypes or challenge them. For example, female subjects may be linked to stereotypically female activities or actions; stereotyping generalisations may be encouraged about groups. Teachers can encourage learners to comment on such statements and challenge them.
Similar exercises can be proposed, which include a broader view of culture (e.g. use a wider range of names; include activities more likely to be enjoyed by minority groups, or clothes worn by minorities; include a wide range of names of countries and peoples).

As a foreign languages teacher, during the first lesson, I always make a contract with my students where we altogether write down our obligations, our rights and our expectations. Among them, we can find respect, justice, dialogue, collaboration, help, empathy, support, acceptance, tolerance and understanding. If I see that any of these values is infringed, I try to give a solution immediately by discussing with the students involved or with all the class (I avoid punishments and other anachronistic methods). This contract has always helped me overcome any difficult situations in class (e.g. racism, xenophobia).

Areas for improving/developing competences:

classroom setting – I believe it’s true that you have to teach and role model the (cultural) values you want to see in your students. We often underestimate our ‘power’ as role models when it comes to teaching young people.

teaching respect for others – Empathy and appreciation in all spheres of life should be guiding principles, e.g. I enjoy designing critical incidents (i.e. short stories including intercultural clashes) in order to develop empathy in my lessons. Furthermore, the 4 Cs (communication, collaboration, creativity, critical thinking) are the foundation of appreciating other because you can do so by talking to each other respectfully, working with each other, creating things together and by critically questioning our actions.

encouraging students to accept difference – A key issue in the classroom! However, this objective is very hard to achieve. We can’t manipulate/brainwash our student; we can only offer alternative ways of looking at things.

teaching empathy/debating skills – I combined these two skills because the go hand in hand in my opinion. Interacting while considering the needs/feelings of other people is crucial to living together peacefully. However, it is sometimes easier said than done to refute clichés or tackle prejudice through communication in the classroom. Small steps (e.g. dialogue activities, activities centring on developing trust in each other) should lead the way towards empathetic discourse.

resolving conflicts – “How can we address verbal/physical abuse in our classes?” Can you remember this question from your days at the university? That was all we wanted to know, yet it is so difficult to find a simple answer to this complex problem. Everyone of has extended his/her own repertoire when it comes to resolving conflicts in class, so have I. Nonetheless, I sometimes can’t get rid of the feeling that a reaction that I conjured up within seconds did not lead to the ideal course of events. Maybe I should encourage myself to pause more often before intervening – a skill we could also teach our students.

Any other area(s): There is something on my mind which I hardly can describe. It is a something I call ‘a general ability to live one’s life’, e.g. without the students’ parents hovering above everything. Only through practical orientation combined with a thorough grasp of life our kids can learn how to adapt to different situations and aren’t shaken to the core as soon as slight difference and/or diverse settings pop up.

The most challenging aspect:

In my opinion, it is very hard to encourage our students to accept difference. Indeed, this is my main goal in class, yet I refrain from becoming their brain – I can teach them things, but they have to think and decide for themselves. Of course, I always reinforce that there are limitations to the freedom of thought/speech as soon as nationalistic/racist/sexist sentiments are involved. Speak your mind, but think before you speak – that’s the creed my students constantly get to hear.

So we should encourage students to dialogue, to listen to each other, to know the different points and to find the similar feelings and needs. Empathy, acceptance and respect are the priority in our multicultural classes. Talking about Chritical Thinkng, I think it is something our students don't have, especially because it isn't something they learn at home.

To be honest, I jotted down my answers to the question before watching the video, not to be exceedingly influenced by the experts, and I've found many of them in the tape, just better expressed. My first point was the building of critical thinking, that I find especially important amongst the other life skills: only with it you can really and deeply understand that diversity is a resource. To strengthen it you must visit many places, even virtually, chiefly by reading and playing simbolically (reading is a fantastic tool to stimulate creativity and empathy). I guess that if a child, from the earliest stages of his life, is used to seing books with all kinds of things, diversity for him won't be something puzzling. To let children explore all the diversity of the world you must use a whole range of languages, from music to painting, to dance, so to reach the inner ear of anybody. I find role-playing particularly effective, chiefly to develop empathy and to help children reflect on their behaviour and feeling. One colleague of mine ( a very good teacher and actress) last year used dubbing with wonderful results. As I view it, the key point in building respect is your example and, as Erica was saing, humour is a valuable supplement (which, unfortunately, I almost completely lack...). But I also believe that you can't forget hard, everyday work: only if you are capable of giving everybody strong basic abilities they won't feel inferior anf think that they deserve, in some way, disrespect. Finally, I completely agree with Alicia: you have to build relations in the group if you want that everybody feel themselves backed up: friendship is an often underestimated superpower.

Developing intercultural competences of our students is not a simple thing. In my opinion we should be sufficiently prepared to deal with the different cultural backgrounds. My view not only includes the adequate knowledge of their languages and their particular needs but the most important is to get into their souls. The psychology in such ages is very sensitive. As a result teachers have to be trained on such issues like chid psychology on specific situations (wars e.t.c.). If they manage to do this, then they will be able to make students overcome their differences and respect each other. Our job is to learn them how to communicate and collaborate understanding that diversity is the most beautiful thing in our relationships. Without it the world would be boring. This can be easily done through workshops with a common goal. Thus they will realise how constructive is to support different views.Furthermore it would be attractive to them if we organised thematic days such as food in a chinese restaurant or a french movie at the cinema with subtitles of course or visit to a "different" museum. All these will encourage them to improve their communication skills and their personal relationships. Last but not least I would like to remind that we ourselves are role models for those children. As a consequence our actions should keep up with the values we maintain. This is the biggest challenge we have to consider.

Pupils confront and learn to know each other even in recreational activities or in the game, during which I think we can let students free to relate. Then there are disciplines that foster relationships, overcoming the obstacle of language. Music, Art, Sports speak a universal language that stimulates mental faculties that can more easily free themselves from cultural patterns. I think that these areas represent a tool that generates empathy and for this reason must be given priority to them in multicultural contexts.

I fully agree with Erika and Alicia. For me the key words here are: respect, open-mindedness and appreciation. You can teach empathy by making the students work towards a common goal. You can teach respect by discussing every "bad word" or bad action in classroom. It´s very important to be curious about other people (students, classmates, colleagues) which means trying to get to know people personally. This is very difficult for me in a Finnish education system where I "teach" and counsel 300 students It´s also demanding to try to understand other people or other cultures. We tend to think "my way" and stick in prejudices. I really liked Alicias words:" It´s not necessary to understand everything."

I share Erika's opinion: empathy is the first ingredient for proper development of intercultural competences. In my daily practice, one of the biggest problems that I see is the prejudice against the foreigner who (partly because of the economic situation of crisis that Italy is experiencing at this time) is often seen as an enemy, an obstacle to the realization of a young native. Among the most effective strategies tested in order to induce the development of empathetic relations and alliance between students of different nationalities there is the team work: the need to achieve a goal, a common goal unleashes positive synergies. You can start from the simple game until you apply the same methodology on authentic work programs.
I also feel that the knowledge of the other in terms of culture and traditions is essential to the development of a healthy relationship.
Ultimately these are the cornerstones for the start of a proper development of intercultural skills:
1) capacity for empathy
2) knowledge of the other (culture and traditions)
3) sharing of human values.
So that our educating action has, however, successfully, I believe that a sharing of objectives with the families of the boys is necessary: the family and school educational agencies must more than ever, in this case to be collaborative, otherwise difficilemnte will succeed to achieve significant results.
In class discussions, readings, films can be some of the useful tools to create the climate for a well done work
inclusion.

Giuliana Italy - There are some key words used by Alicia and Erika which a teacher has to take in mind in order to succeed in developing the students’ intercultural competence: communication, open-mindness, empathy. They should be our goals in our daily practice, regardless of the subject matter we teach. A classroom is a small community, the place where we build our society and teaching students respect, empathy, collaboration, how to debate, how to confront each other and to resolve a conflict, are our primary educational objectives. Generally speaking, I believe this is the most important challange of our 21st century society!

Personal approach is also very important. We have to know students story, parents, needs and - traumas.

Also, we have to know how to cope with the post traumatic stress. School psychologist is very important in our work.

We are visiting local synagogue or Serbian orthodox church. As Erika and Alicia said, dialogue and respect are key-concept to teach empathy and cooperation among peers. In my experience I saw that peer activity or group work are always a good way to encourage learners to spend some time together and get to know each other. now that I'm teaching to adults, I can see how difficult it is. Children are more open to new things and tend to welcome diversity with more enthusiasm. Adults are usually bounded by their beliefs, prejudices and personal experiences. In this context, what Erika said becomes extremely important: even if we do not agree or we do not share the same ideals, we can listen to each other and respect each other. I would like to help my learners to approach this way of life. But in order to achieve this, I am aware I have to embrace it myself and work hard on my empathy skills.

Once when she had just arrived from her country ,I was teaching
a poem about nature and its seasons and she brought me a similar poem she had already studied in her country.I asked her to share the poem with her classmates.
Another time we made a poster and she decorated it with some origami teaching all the class to make them.I always encourage her to share with her classmates her previous experiences. So, I agree that involving our students into activities in order to reach a common goal and developing the four Cs is important to create their intercultural competence.

My collegues and I we tried to support her incorporation in the class team but her mother din't help in this direction, so we decide to call the parents in a meeting at school. We soon understood that their culture was very different from ours about the education of a girl. The father was more open minded person and support our educational plan. In fact he was invited to visit the class and give informations about their life in Sudan. The whole think proved to be very interesting for all the class and the girl seemed to be very proud about the presence of her father.

The most challenging area to realize in class is perhaps the teaching of empathy, especially when it comes to teeangers who want to feel unique and "different" and tend to forget ther people's needs or to take all they have for granted.
Another problem area is the parent-teacher relationship, as not all of our students' parents are always willing to cooperate in their children's intercultural education.
Diversity is a richness. We must learn to respect themselves, the other ones, listen to the other needs. Teachers should encourage the dialogue, learn how to resolve conflicts in the classroom, how to communicate. It's also important to create intercultural laboratories so that students can work together and share their ideas.

First thing teachers need to do in the very first begging of the year, as Ms Alicia mentioned, is to create the culture they want to have in the class. More specifically, they need to create a friendly and respectful environment, in which acceptance and good gestures are taking priority. What we need to focus on is that acceptance and cordiality should be cultivated not only between the students, but also between the teacher and the students and between the teacher and the parents. Also among the parents themselves. In addition, through the whole process of cultural competence, the teachers should highlight everytime that the similarities finally between the students are surpassing the differences. For example, they are all students of the same class, they are all at the same age, most of them have many things in common, most of them have the same interests and hobbies, etc. The teachers should always point out the common points of the students and reduce the differences between them that may exist.
Furthermore, I was surprised when Ms Alicia was talking about modern teaching techniques and especially about debate. Me myself I have been taught this technique in my university from my professor and I have also tried it with my classmates in real. The benefits of such technique are truly amazing! The students get used to the dialogue and also they learn how to argue in the frame of a friendly and respectful environment. They also learn how to accept others opinions and they learn how to respect the rules. Another technique that I can suggest is to give the students a scenario that represents a real situation. This scenario talks about a real problem that happens in the outside world. The teacher after gives roles to the students to act. Each of them has a specific role that they need to carry through with it. After, they all trying to find a solution to the problem, each one from his point of view and based on his role. The teacher represents the rules to the students at the beginning of the activitiy. This activity really helps the students to understand the word "empathy" and to try it within a realistic backround.

The latter, teaching them empathy, I find it the most challenging as our society has become very competitive. We also have to find ways to encourage their curiosity and to teach them to be open-minded.

They have touched upon empathy, acceptance of other people's ideas, the critical four 'C's, the use of technology in order to extend the classroom, the encouragement of dialogue among students and between T and Ss. All these elements are important towards the common goal of inter-understanding!
Though diversity is useful, it is ofen challenging to cope with it as a teacher whose experience in such matters is minimum. However, it is usually the students themselves who show us the way to act proactively. Through their willingness to adjust to their brand-new reality, they make an effort to communicate - a first step toward 'interculturality'. Different mother tongues are hard to go by in the first semester and patience on the part of the teacher is essential to prevent the feeling of getting lost into translation on the part of the students! Getting to know them on a first name basis is essential and verbal encouragement when misunderstanding occurs is also needed.

And to do that teachers have to create a loving and caring environment in the classroom in the beginning of the year. We can try to learn more about their culture, their language and their family background. I strongly believe that students need to be encouraged to critically reflect on cultural diversity by experiencing it in a constructive way in the classroom.
