Long tentacles covered the ship. A loud, screeching noise was heard from down under. Eduardo manned a cannon, firing at the beast in the water, hoping to at least slow it down long enough for the other members of the crew to steer the ship out of the creature’s grasp. He heard the monster groan. He turned to the other crew members and exclaimed, “I hit it!” , with a grin on his face. That grin disappeared when he turned back and saw that the creature’s head had risen from the dark blue depths. A grey octopus-like face with large, completely black eyes ascended, and felt like it was staring deep into his soul. From a face filled with excitement to complete despair, Eduardo was frozen with fear. One of the monstrosities' long, pink tentacles released its hold on the ship’s mast, and instead reached for Eduardo. It grabbed him within seconds. He struggled to escape the abomination’s clutches, but to no avail. The arm sunk down into the ocean and Eduardo’s vision grew darker and darker, until it faded to pitch blackness. When Eduardo opened his eyes, he was laying on a couple crates on the ship’s deck. The sun was beaming on his face. “Well, well, well. Looks like Sleeping Beauty’s finally awake,” Uncle Buckely said with a smirk on his face. Eduardo stared at the oak wood mast of the ship with a blank expression, until Uncle Buckely asked, “Nephew, ye feeling alright? Ye look like you’ve just seen inside Davy Jones’ locker!” Eduardo responded, “Hmmm? Oh, yeah I’m good. Just had a...weird dream, that’s all.” Uncle Buckely nodded and went below deck to check on the sick crewmates. They’ve been traveling for 8 days now, trying to reach Eduardo and Uncle Buckely’s hometown of Ghwyaquert. Around day 6, half of the crew came down with something. Eduardo thought it was just seasickness, but Uncle Buckely insisted that his crew did NOT get seasick. “How could they? They’re members of a ship crew! Ye think I’d hire a crew that couldn’t go 2 feet into the ocean without spillin’ der lunch?” he argued. Eduardo just wanted to see his father and mother again. His mind flashed back to a time when they all used to spend so much time together. They used to go fishing all the time at Lake Tyronis. His dad used to joke that if Eduardo kept catching all the fish, a giant octopus would rise out of the water, and eat him instead! It reminded Eduardo of his dream earlier. The large octopus-like monster with its dark, gazing eyes, large tentacles, and grey body, dragging him to the DARK DEPTHS OF HE…..”Eduardo, come quick!” Uncle Buckely yelled from down below. Before Eduardo could finish his thought, he was rushing down to the kitchen in the ship. Uncle Buckely was standing there, standing in front of a large barrel of fish the crew had collected that morning. “The fish, they’re all…..rotten!” he cried. “That must have been the reason why some of the crew got sick. See! I told you it wasn’t seasickness!” Uncle Buckely commented. Eduardo rolled his eyes, but then realized that he never ate any of the fish, and instead decided to take a nap. “Uncle, did you eat any fish?” Eduardo asked with a worried expression on his face. “No,” Uncle Buckely explained, “but that’s why I came in here and checked. I was feeling peckish. But now, I think I lost my appetite.” Before Eduardo could answer back, the boat started rocking violently, and screeching came from the deck. Both human and...something else. Eduardo and Uncle Buckely ran up as fast as they could. “What’s going on?” Uncle Buckely questioned with panic in his voice. “Something’s under us!” A crewmate answered back. Uncle Buckely was about to say something else, when he noticed his nephew shaking. He asked his nephew, “Eduardo, what’s wrong?” “I know that screeching,” Eduardo replied. Then, all of a sudden, the rocking stopped. For a moment, it seemed almost peaceful. Before another word could be said, a large, octopus-like creature with pink tentacles, large black-filled eyes, and a grey body came out of the ocean. Two of its tentacles landed on the deck of the ship. One of the ship’s crew members made a run for one of the cannons. Before they even made it halfway, what looked like blood released from the creature’s tentacle. The blood covered the crew mate and he began to violently shake and throw up, until he suddenly stopped moving. Eduardo stared at the lifeless husk with fear in his eyes. The same fear he felt in his dream. He stared at the...thing in front of him, and noticed it staring back at him. The creature used its other tentacle to swiftly grab Eduardo and pulled him down into the dark blue depths. For once, Eduardo wasn’t scared. He knew that he would drown. He knew that this was his last moment. And he was ok with that. At least, until he saw another tentacle splash into the water from above. He panicked as he saw the ship wrapped in the creature’s clutches. Instead of drowning, both Eduardo and the ship were consumed in the abomination’s mouth. The last thing any of them would see would be the hundreds of rows of teeth getting closer and closer to them. The last thing they heard…. was a strange cracking sound.

The story “Lacrimosa” by SILVIA MORENO-GARCIA represents a strong horror tale because of the Mood and suspense “Behind his house there were prickly pears and emptiness. “No roads, and no buildings. Just a barren nothing swallowed by the purple horizon. It was easy to believe that Llorona roamed there”. Lacrimosa seems a little off She's asking if people have seen her children but she's looking around wide spaces where there's nothing at no building or anything. “Her voice, sandpaper against his ears, makes him shiver. His heart jolts as though someone has pricked it with a needle.” When I read that it makes me think of mood like if I was to hear that I will react the same way and have a scared mood I would literally run if I see someone like her asking for kids. “The most common tale was that she drowned her children in the river and afterwards roamed the town, searching for them at night; her pitiful cries are a warning and an omen.” If people know about her and about the stories people heard they should be more considerate about her if she's asking for her children she's already acting suspicious. People have heard stories about Lacrimosa and knowing those stories they still walk around not wondering anything like if she's back or if she's going to come back people should look out and ask questions like “ is she already around ?” or “ Has anyone heard or has a woman come up to anyone asking about children?” Has anyone heard any crys ? people don't really pay attention to things like that I guess but if I was in that Story I would have just moved away.

I knew something was wrong, if I haven’t gone inside that house this would not have happened. If I would have just ignored my friends and stayed at home everything would have been fine. Yet I was ignorant and because of that I am meeting my end, It all began on a Saturday morning with a call from my friend Steven.

“Hey John, wake up! It’s Saturday and you know that haunted house I’ve been talking about lately? Well, Sarah and Samantha said they are down to go with us!” I squint my eyes his voice ringing through my head,

“Steven, I just woke up, give me some time to gather my thoughts for once. I’ll be over at the house shortly, bye.” I groan and force myself out of bed, getting dressed and following my usual daily routine. Once I am done getting myself together, I head out and make my way to the infamous haunted house of our very quiet neighborhood. When I arrive I see Steven and the two wonderful girls; Samantha and Sarah who are waving at me and I blush.

“Hey Sam and Sarah, how are you guys doing?” I ask, patting Steven on the back.

“We’re fine, looking forward to exploring this creepy place.” She sarcastically states, pointing at the run-down single-family home before us. The dark house looks old and as if it has survived a war, atomic bomb, and tsunami all at once.

We head onto the porch, Steven taking the lead with the two girls side by side in front of me. Out of the corner of my eye through the cracked window, I see a figure. A pale face wearing some sort of cloak but before I can really examine it I see nothing. I shake it off believing that it is just my imagination but soon find out it was definitely real. “John you can see if the back door is open, take Sarah with you. Sam and I will see if any of the windows can be opened.”

“Don’t call me Sam!” Samantha retorts rolling her eyes.

As I nod I catch a glimpse of Steven’s wink, and I roll my eyes heading to the back of the house with Sarah. Sure enough, the back door was locked and we go back to the front of the house only to find out Steven and Samantha are not there. After looking around, I see an opened window with shattered glass scattered around the porch and inside the house.

“It seems like they went in, ladies first.” I take a short bow, letting Sarah climb through the window and I follow her through.

The place is dusty and dark the only light is from the sun shining through the broken window and cracks in between the wooden planks.

“Steven? Samantha? You guys playing a prank or what?” Sarah shouts, walking around hesitantly the wood floor creaking with every step. I look up the stairs and see a passing figure followed by the creaking of the wood floor,

“Steven I just saw you, what a dumb prank!” I state, heading up the stairs looking down the hall. There are weird paintings and the walls are torn and scratched up.

“Sarah, you saw him too right?” I ask but no reply. I turn around only to find out Sarah is not there. I go back down the stairs, looking around the fear getting to me.

“This is not funny anymore you guys!” I shout a mixture of fear and anger filling my mind. I hear a creak in the room next to me and slam the door open running inside. The room was empty, and the only thing that caught my attention was the door in front of me. As I walk to the middle of the room, the door behind me slams shut. I turned around running to the door trying to open it, but my effort was futile. The room is pitch black and I sit with my back facing the door, scared out of my mind. Then I hear the creaking as if a door was opening. The room remains pitch black but the creaking continues for a short period before reaching a halt. I feel something grab my ankle and I am dragged away from the outside world, into an abyss of nothingness. I don’t know if my friends met a similar fate, but I know that my time living a normal life has come to its end.

This is the story of Our failure to understand the meaning of equivalent exchange.

I was tired of my life and I didn't have the courage to take it yet, And he was just curious about the outlook of how someone else lives their life.

Once when I was going on a family vacation and my family thought it would be a good idea to go camping in the woods not so far from my home. We got everything like the bags, people, and some food because it's going to be a little while of a drive. When we driving maybe about.. 2-3 hour drive, But during the drive i had a funny feeling, but i never paid much attention since this is our first time doing anything like this. When we head there we set everything up and made a fire, my mom asked me “Hey honey?, Can you get more wood over there” as she point to a pile of wood in the distance, “The fire is about to go out” And i respond with “Oh alrighty”, and I walk to get some wood and i had some head phones on so i can get my mind off things when we are here, then when i was picking some wood up. I felt like i was being watched. I turn and look around and nothing.. It seemed off so I just went back because it's better ‘Be safe than sorry’ So i went back to the camp site. And we sat there for a bit talking and having a laugh and what not. And it was getting dark so we went to the tent. I was getting comfortable and trying to sleep with my headphones in. Then i kept getting tapped on the shoulder. I turn around and said “Wh-What you want sis?” And she says “Alex..I'm scared” I reply with “Why are you scared, what happened?” then she says “There’s something out there” I get up and look threw the little holes where the buttons were, and i look around and i saw nothing. “Sis there was nothing there” My sister of course said, “Can you look again?” I thought to myself, i really don't want to look out there, It's really creepy but i did not want to scare my sister so i did again. I look around and I see nothing, until something came from the sky? I jerked back scared. My sister whispered “What?!” I try to get my cool so i don't scare my sis. “Yeah yeah sorry, i just scared my self thats all, lets just go to bed” As we laid down we heard noises but there were not.. Normal. I turn to my sister and i put my finger on her mouth to shush her. The noises got louder and louder and it seemed like it knew we were there. I'm trying desperately to stop shaking because my sister was so scared till the point of crying. I tell her “it's ok it's ok”. The noises stopped. I went to check threw the holes and… I saw that thing stare back at me, I-It had a bug face and huge eyes looking right at me. I Julte back in absolute fear. It knew i was there so i covered mine and my sisters mouth and tears coming off my face, and we both closed our eyes and tried to sleep. We woke up the next day in fear. We told our mom what happened and she looked like she thought we were crazy. But said “fine fine we don't do this again but no more staying up late” And we went to the car put everything in and drove off. And me and my sister will never forget that day.and I will never take that risk again and looking.

“PLEASE!! I’M SORRY!! I’LL DO ANYTHING I PROMISE!! HELP ME!! SOMEBODY!!! arg ack grr hak gaha…”

After I finished slitting her throat with the knife they gave me, I decided to cower in the corner of the slaughter room. I cried and quivered as I looked at my bloody hands, warm tears ran down my face and dripped onto my hands. The ones I use now to execute my comrades.

I used to be free until I ended up in this position. A bird in the sky that chose to avoid some circumstance that it didn't like. I was a single woman living alone in a tiny apartment with a 9 to 5 office job. I used to be an actor, but I ended up in a drab workplace that I despised. Politics and government issues are not something I am really interested in. It was simply boring and difficult for me. But it was just one of my many errors of judgement. At the moment, I was unaware of the press and how Congress was passing undemocratic legislation. It was just a few days ago when every woman in my office, as well as the whole city and, most likely, the whole world, was fired due to new laws and policies. I dragged my feet to the exit, putting all of my office things in a brown box and leaving the office sad and disappointed. I was now unemployed and running out of food. Only a few weeks, women-led demonstrations erupted, with the bulk of the demonstrators being jailed and never seen again. Some say they are kidnapped and tortured or killed. I didn't trust those ideas and shied away from them.

“No, the government can’t do that, besides it's illegal nationwide, or could it be...no I don’t think so.”

I said to myself. Harsher policies were passed and women were not allowed to be outside without a man or man’s permission. Later single women were thrown out of their houses by the authorities and were taken away to a place called The Garden Of Eden. All of this policy and terrible law-making was making me so indignant as none of this was fair for women.

We were carried on a bus, and the woman and I on the bus smelled like rotting flesh as we approached the Garden Of Eden's gate. We were going through a gated camp with segregated areas for men and women. The men were dressed in a worn-out blue suit, while the women were dressed in pink.

“Is this a death camp or something?” One of the women on the bus wondered aloud, "Are we going to die?"

“No, we're going to a mansion,” says the narrator. “Take a look,” a younger lady said, referring to a distant mansion in front of a tree.

Although every woman on the bus was excited, and some were perplexed, I returned my gaze to the gated camp. As I approached 12 large ditches in the field littered with the bare bodies of what probably had once been the camp's inhabitants, my heart sank 1,000 feet.

“BBBLLLAAARRGG!!!”

“Oh my, are you okay! Did you get car sick?

“I’m fine, plus we’re on a bus,” I said as I wiped the icky vomit from my mouth.

We made it to the Mansion and were given uniforms and shoes to wear. It was a long white dress and flat black shoes. A woman came out claiming she was our new teacher.

“Here I will teach you to do the work of God and what he wanted for us,” she explained

“My name is Elizabeth and I am one of the headmasters of The Garden Of Eden,” she said as she slapped a big ruler in her right hand.

Weeks had passed, and each day I became more anxious, knowing that the things they told me made me uncomfortable and worried about how to serve a man, and that we would soon have to raise our own children, and that God produced one man and one woman to be together. I could see that all the other ladies, not just me, were scared about this place. Later 3 well-dressed men came and Elizabeth explained that they are the chosen mighty ones.

“I have a total of 150 young ladies, and you will be divided into three groups of 50 each, and you will go with one of these men and serve their every need, including bearing their children, housework, and so on,” Elizabeth instructed.

Now it all made sense we were being prepared to serve just powerful men and their families for the rest of our lives.

“If you do really believe in god then you should know that God fought Lucifer so that we, his children would have the freedom of will, so I will not be serving these devils you call powerful men!” cried out one of the Lady’s.

The woman was pulled to her knees by a squad of guards who emerged from the doors of the mansion.

“What did you mean, you ungrateful animal, how dare you call them that,” Elizabeth screamed as she slapped the woman, who was now a puddle of tears.

Elizabeth pulled the lady’s hair to make her stand up and look out of the window towards the camp.

“LOOK! THOSE PEOPLE IN THE CAMP ARE NOTHING BUT ANIMALS DIRTY HOMOSEXUALS WHO REFUSED GOD IN THEIR LIFE”

“YOU DON'T KNOW THAT, JESUS SAID HE LOVES US NO MATTER WHAT!”

Then the 3 men rushed towards the lady and beat her up.

“You b****!” they screamed at her while spitting at her.

They managed to beat her and hurl insulting slurs at her until she was no longer recognizable, at which point the guards took her away.

The other 49 women and I were relocated to the mansion of the trio's most influential man. Their views about the bible were soon revealed as a fraud because they lacked respect towards humanity, referring to homosexuals as "dirty," and repeatedly beat women. Our master did not provide us with enough nutrition and only served us one meal a day. A cup of soup and some bread are included in the ration. His wife, on the other hand, was pleasant to us when we looked down at her as she spoke. As a result, when she was good to us, she would give us extra food, which the women and I devoured.

Months elapsed, and I became more depressed with each passing day. It's a hawk, it's a helicopter, but no, it's just my hope taking off. The master and his wife selected some of the women to bear their twins. Until all of the women have been having a secret meeting of escaping the place through the forest. We devised the most effective strategic strategy. One of the women, however, was desperate enough to flee to the bush, but before the guards could apprehend her, she returned with a slight grin and handed me a note before being executed. The note said:

“There’s a wall surrounding this place”

My heart sank to the bottom of the abyss. When I told the other woman what was written, one of them said, "We can do it!" What we have to do now is make rope.”

Despite the fact that it was a false hope, I went along with the scheme, as did the other ladies.

Since we couldn't risk being trapped together, I was the first to get over the massive wall because I had a gymnastics background.

Once I made it over I cried as I could see water and more water. Over the wall, there was nothing but a body of water. I collapsed to my knees, only to discover that the guards had been trailing me and had caught me red-handed. I was escorted to a room where I was subjected to torture. One by one, my nails fell out.

“Who else are you working with!”

“What are their names!”

“If you don’t tell us we will kill you and if you do tell us we will give you a lighter sentence.”

“3...2...1...zeeroo”

“OKAY OKAY PLEASE DON'T KILL ME IT’S ALL THE WOMAN, WE CAME UP WITH PLANS AND PREPARED TO ESCAPE MONTHS AGO. PLEASE DON'T KILL ME I’LL DO ANYTHING!” I screamed.

Which leads us to now. One by one I killed my comrades all because I was a coward. This was my punishment and If I didn’t kill them I would be killed. I was afraid to die. But now I have the strength. I say this to anyone who is reading this. If you're in the same world as me, then RUN, HIDE, BUT JUST RUN! As I stand on the stool and tie rope over my neck I say goodbye. The one thing I regret is being a coward. My comrades would have lasted long enough to be free if it hadn't been for me. Before then, I wish you luck.

I believe Lacrimosa is an effective horror tale because it’s interesting and makes you want to read more as you go. In the text, it says, “His uncle told him the dogs howled when they saw the Llorona. Ramon runs to the girls’ room and sneaks into his mother’s bed, terrified of the noise..” This supports my claim because as he’s listening to these howls, he’s terrified. You start to wonder what happens next. In the short story, it says, “These things follow you. Maybe ghosts can follow you, too.” Think about it. What are the little noises you hear at night when you’re alone? Do you ever hear them when you’re with somebody? I’ve always believed in ghost and think they’re watching us. In the text, it says, “Don’t ever let the Llorona look at you, his uncle said. Once she’s seen you she’ll follow you home and haunt you to death, little boy.” This part gives more of an intense feeling. The more you think about it, your heart starts to beat fast and you think to yourself, “ what if i look at her? Will she really haunt me?"

The story “Lacrimosa” by Silvia Moreno-Garcia was an effective horror tale because of the aspects of foreshadowing, suspense, and mood. “The most common tale was that she drowned her children in the river and afterwards roamed the town, searching for them that night.” This quote supports my claim because she shows a sign of suspense when people found out the lady drowned her children in the river then fakes it off later on “looking for her children” later that day, that's kinda sketchy. In the text it says, “The dogs are howling”. They scare him. Wild, stray animals that roam the back of the house at nights. His uncle told him the dogs howled when they saw Llorona. Ramon runs to the girls’ room and sneaks into his mother’s bed, terrified of the noise and his mother has to hold him in her arms until he falls asleep. But when he wakes up Ramon is in his apartment and it is only one dog, the neighbor’s Doberman, barking.” This evidence supports my claim because it gives a mood of suspense like what’s gonna happen or what eventually could happen later on in the story. Talking about the dogs only howled when they saw Llorona, that makes me think was it foreshadowing Llorona on coming up again later on in the story. Four more blocks and he’ll be home. In the text it states, “That’s when Ramon hears the squeal. A high-pitched noise. It’s a shriek, a moan, a sound he’s never heard before. What the hell is that? He turns and looks and it is the old woman, the one he’s nicknamed Llorona, pushing her shopping cart. Squeak, squeak, goes the cart, matching each of his steps. Squeak, squeak. A metallic chirping echoed by a low mumble. “Children, children, children.” Squeak, squeak, squeak. A metallic chant with an old rhythm. He walks faster. The cart matches his pace; wheels roll. He thinks she is about to hit him with the 🤬 thing and then all of a sudden the sound stops. He looks over his shoulder. The old woman is gone. She has veered into an alley, vanishing behind a large dumpster. This evidence supports my claim because it shows a sigh of suspense, Ramon is just on the way home then later hears a weird high pitch noise he turns around gets a glance at the old woman he named Llorona, he doesn't pay no mind to it he speed walks away.. then the sound stops he turned around and the old woman was gone. I don’t want any problems with the creepy old woman.

The Horror Tale ¨Popsy¨ written by Stephen King is an example of an effective horror tale which uses the multiple aspects of Horror to create a tale worth reading and analyzing. It utilizes all of the aspects from being able to describe the setting, making the story have a lot of suspense, foreshadow what might happen at the end with even the most subtle of things, and even set the tone to where you know something might happen and make the story feel like it went in a straight line from the front to the end. It flows so perfectly with it all, and you can tell when analysing, annotating, or just reading one of his texts. In the text Stephen King writes, ¨The kid yanked at the handcuff again and Sheridan saw the metal strut bend a little more. Christ, how could any kid do that?¨ and this was an excellent way of building some suspense along with foreshadowing the grand reveal of who the child was. It brings a sort of thought as to who this child might be, and what it was capable of by being able to bend solid metal just like that. It makes you wonder what else it does, while also hinting toward the ending as well. In the text Stephen King also states, ¨The kid bit his hand twice, bringing blood. God, his teeth were like razors. The pain went deep and sent a steely ache all the way up his arm. He punched the kid in the mouth.¨ This was a wonderful way of building up more toward the end, it uses a sort of slow burn by revealing more of the child. Sharp teeth, strength unlike any other child, It is definitely something you would have to look at. It builds more to the end and also adds more of a development to the mood of the story. It shows how serious things were, also giving off a sort of energy that the story was getting closer to the climax using that slow burn pacing. Toward the end of the text Stephen King describes the comeuppance of Sheridan by saying this, ¨Sheridan was shaken like a rag doll. He shrieked and was shaken again. He heard Popsy asking solicitously if the kid was still thirsty; heard the kid saying yes, very, the bad man had scared him and his throat was so dry.¨ This was done excellently using the slow burning mechanics, the foreshadowing and suspense built all the way to this moment. It showed how ruthless Popsy truly was and his true identity by getting back at the man who kidnapped his grandson. Popsy is a vampire, so the hints of strength, biting and sharp teeth were used to great effect through his grandson. This allowed the climax to build off of it all and end this story well. This is what made it such an effective horror tale, it just had everything in the story culminate at the end in a really good way. It was storytelling with an ending which was built for it.
