For my IO, I chose a poem by Carol Ann Duffy titled "The Little Red Cap," which was the literary text, and for the non-literary text, I analyzed a Budweiser advertisement, "big appetite." The global issue that both texts brought out was the impact of gender inequality on female identity, relating it to the broader goal issue of Politics, Power, and Justice.

The above document is the IO outline that contains the 10 points that summarize my IO. I learned several things through the IO, including time management skills and articulating my ideas and analyses clearly. I chose this particular global issue because there are many instances where I have seen stereotypical gender roles pressed against women and how their identity is hidden under that of men. In Carol Ann Duffy’s poems, many highlight the same global issue, which inspired me to choose this global issue, the Budweiser advertisement also highlighted the same global issue. In terms of connecting the global issue to both, the text type was relatively issued because both texts highlight the global issue of women's identity being impacted by the gender inequality they face.

I learned time management skills as I had to speak for 10 minutes and give enough time for each section of my IO so that I don’t miss out on any important point or don’t explain it as required because of finishing in time. The main challenge I faced while preparing for my IO was articulating my points and not making everything repetitive throughout the IO. Initially, when preparing for the IO, I would constantly repeat my points with different pieces of evidence found in both text types. However, after planning and practicing, I managed to organize my IO well so that it would not seem like repeating the points for the entire IO.

Overall, I feel that my IO went well as I connected my evidence from the poem and advertisement to the global issue chosen. I also analyzed the volume of work, other poems of Carol Ann Duffy from “The World’s wife,” and other Budweiser advertisements of the same campaign. This shows that the particular poem and advertisement chosen is not the only text type that showcases the global issue. I also gave enough evidence, like the advertisement's clothing attire and word choices for the poem.

Slaughterhouse Five

Slaughterhouse-Five is a novel that reflects on the impact of war and its consequences on human lives. The story is set during World War II and follows the experiences of Billy Pilgrim, who becomes “unstuck in time”, experiencing moments from his past, present, and future in a non-linear manner. The author, Kurt Vonnegut, uses this narrative style to illustrate the fragmented and disjointed nature of war, and how it affects soldiers and civilians alike. The novel is a powerful commentary on the horrors of war, and the inhumanity and senselessness of it all. Vonnegut depicts the atrocities of the bombing of Dresden, Germany, and how soldiers and civilians suffered and died in the attack. The novel portrays war as an indiscriminate force that destroys lives and communities, with no regard for the individuals affected. Slaughterhouse-Five is also a testament to the resilience of the human spirit in the face of such horrors. Through Billy’s experiences, the novel portrays the struggle for meaning and purpose amidst the chaos and destruction of war. The novel is a call to action, urging readers to reflect on the impact of war and to work towards a world where such atrocities are never repeated. Personally, I feel that Slaughterhouse-Five is a powerful novel that reflects on the impact of war on human lives and society. Through its depiction of the horrors of war, the novel serves as a reminder of the need to work toward peace and never forget the sacrifices and losses incurred in conflict. The novel is a work of comparison due to the overlapping AOE of 'Intertextuality' and 'Time and Space'
