Exploiting the synergy that is increasing between music and video games, the best platform could probably be a famous existing videogame. The Travis Scott performance on Fortnite would be a perfect case study for the organizers. The videogame choice can also be linked to the dreamy atmosphere of Fyre Festival where a lot of celebrities and influencers were testimonials. Also, choosing a videogame as a platform means that you have the chance to interact with other participants and artists. Moreover, you have the opportunity to create unique locations (which was one of the main problem of Fyre Festival).

1. The Introduction To Fyre Festival:

Fyre festival was to say harder to miss that most festivals. The scheduled festival planned to go ahead on April 28-30 and May 5-7 2017 didn’t go to plan by its main organiser Billy McFarland. The festival was being held on a Bahamian Island and was marketed to the audience in such a misleading way it could be set up for disaster. The disaster of this festival was to such a high level that even a highly anticipated show was created aired on Netflix outlining the failure of this event.

The organiser of the festival was consequently sentenced to six years in prison where he had to forfeit $26 million a high price to pay for a failed event. In addition this additional chargers were placed towards McFarland with various wire-fraud charges and for processing fake tickets through a fake account. This event was endorsed by a-list celebrities and models such as Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid and Hailey Baldwin but it is unknown whether they were aware of really how bad this event was set out to be.

The different between perception and reality was at fold when in regards to this festival selling the customers a dream rather than a real experience. The designated Bohemian Island was in actual fact a small parking lot next to a marina with local boats and just north of a Sandals Resort. In addition to this the project was changed to take place in a resort that was abandoned this change was surprisingly not announced by McFarland.

The campaign was as stated before highly endorsed by high level influencers with hundreds of millions of followers on Instagram enabling the reach of this festival to become greater than most and was seen as a high life/high level, once in a life time experience. Various videos posted throughout the influencers profile showed other models progressing round a tropical beach with various text highlighting how great this experience would be.

Monetization model

On an existing videogame the event could be completely free. The monetization could be done through special upgrades which you can buy before the event or directly during the event. The participants should see other participants using these gadgets/upgrades (examples: special access to backstage and soundcheck, Q&A through live chat with artists, avatar customization...). In this way people could take part to the festival completely free but, in the mean time, the imitation effect among the audience could let to buy gadgets/upgrades easily.

The dangers of social media influencer marketing: Fyre was promoted via numerous social influences. It’s promotional video saw many famous models pose on a Caribbean beach. The catastrophe shows that social media influencer marketing is dangerous: Fyre was described as “the best coordinated social influencer campaign ever,” however what was promoted was a mere fantasy - Now, it’s clear there’s a lack of credibility for influencer marketing campaigns.

The change of social media marketing: The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) regulates advertising to ensure customers aren’t put in danger / purchase something falsely advertised. New regulations announced in 2017 days before Fyre. (“that influencers should clearly and conspicuously disclose their relationships to brands when promoting or endorsing products through social media.”)

Distrust of small brands: Distrust in the small brands’ promotional campaigns of mega events - Fyre fell under the ‘small brands’ category with 45k followers. With a lack of credibility as a small brand, they teamed with ‘mega-influencers’. However, the result of the festival clearly showed the ‘small brands’’ lack of resources/budget.

Public relations crisis: A PR crisis can be described as “a threat to organizational reputation and an action that is going to change how stakeholders interact with the organization”. Fyre’s highly publicised catastrophe led to the brand’s end of its booking app company, legal trouble for its founder and time, money and peace of mind lost for attendees. Also the islands locals.

The Social Buzz: The event was highly publicised and reached millions via social media. However, its failing plans led the brand to suffer from huge reputations damage via Instagram, Facebook, Twitter etc. Fyre’s flop showed that social media can be used to promote brands both positively and negatively. So is social buzz worth the potential damage?
