Hi. So eye contact dermatitis is more on the surface of the eye lid on top the eye; where women put eye shadow and eye liner there. Can be due to an allergy or an irritant. The eyelid will appear inflamed, itchy and swollen, like as if there is a rash there. The eye itself may not be red. If red, it is due to patient scratching or rubbing. Treated with oral antihistamine and cold compress.

Allergic conjunctivitis is more on the conjunctiva itself, the inside of the eye lid, the layer that covers the eyeball. The eye will be red and very itchy and also can be due to an allergy or an irritant. The whole eye would be swollen also in most cases. This would require an eye drop such as sodium cromoglycate 2% (brand name: opticrom/allergocrom) OR naphcon OR naphcon A OR any other decongestant/antihistamine that may be available in the pharmacy.

Hope this answers your question.

Thank you.

~Darshini.

Dear Ms Darshini, may i know why do we use cold compression for eye contact dermatitis, whereas apply warm compression for blepharitis? Is cold compression the same thing as warm compression? What are actually the differences between these two? As what I have understood, warm compression is the use of cloth or cotton wool with boiled and cooled water and compress on the affected area, what about cold compression- is it the use of ice? Thanks

So cold compression is using ice cold water to dampen the cloth ahd applied directly to the affected area, whereas warm compress is using warm water, slightly warmer then room temperature, and slightly higher then your skin temperature to dampen the cloth and applied directly to affected area.

Eye contact dermatitis is an inflammation, the area is itchy and warm to touch due to the the body's inflammatory markers in the area. Cool compress is to cool the area down and provide temporary relief. It is also thought to constrict capillaries and reduce inflammation.

We do not use warm or cold compress for blepharitis, but more for a stye, hordeolum or chalazion. The use of warm compress is thought to dilate capillaries and bring more blood flow to the area, promoting drainage and healing. Most cases of blepharitis treatment is usually eyelid hygiene and if recurrent then a topical antibiotic which may need a prescription.

Hope this answers your question.

Thank you.

~Darshini
