I didn’t see a label. I don’t remember’ if I’d been alone, I would have given myself the biggest bruise of my life. I would have turned myself into one big bruise”(295). After Thomas’s death, Oskar wants his answers and uses the key found in the blue vase as a motivation. Foer highlights the key as a deliberate distraction, when Oskar forgot one little detail about his findings, he stated would want to pain himself, even worse he would want to become the pain. When stating “I would have turned myself into one big bruise” this demonstrates the pressure Oskar puts on himself  to find the lock. His obsessive behavior towards his finding portrays what he’s willing to do to find his closure.The larger idea Foer is trying to get at is, those who experienced loss will always have the temptation to search knowing the trauma will always be right behind them.dilnoza

But I also became  a little heavier, because I was getting farther from Mom” (52). The apparent metaphor in the quote shows how far the key has brought Oskar, at least that’s what he thinks. The key has been driving a motivation in Oskar that he will one day have his answers and a happily ever ending. Oskar needs to open his eyes and see the truth in front of him, he doesn’t have a closure. When Oskar states “I became a little lighter[because he was searching for his dad]” that shows that Oskar has a scene replaying in his mind over and over again of him finally finding what he needs or what he thinks he needs. Not only does the metaphor lead to this conclusion, but the imagery in Foer’s words, when reading it's easy to imagine Oskar having a big amount of weight on his shoulders and all of a sudden it all vanishes because of his “closure”. The larger idea is that motivation if everywhere but, taking advantage of a small thing and turning it into something it’s not getting anyone anywhere and pushing those who care about you further. Keys, in this poem are referring to piano keys rather than keys which fit locks.  Although different in physicality, the idea is still the same that the keys are a bridge to communicate to another.  Hayasaki personifies the music, representing the harmony of the piano as a sort if person to communicate to.  In the 4th stanza, Hayasaki uses the metaphor:  “Let your desire communicate to me” .  The bridge or “communication” between you and the harmony, are the keys that you press.  Hayasaki idea parallels Foer’s idea that keys from a communication bridge between Oskar and the people he meets. Because the string was still around my neck, when she leaned in to look at the key, her face was incredibly close to my face.” (97). Oskar’s journey throughout the story which was later revealed,  was to find companionship with all the people he meets, which is especially shown when he first arrives at Abby Black’s house.  Foer uses the key metaphorically as a bridge to connect Oskar and other people he meets.  With the string “still around my neck”, and the key bringing Abby closer to Oskar, the key literally brings Abby closer to Oskar with little space, and the key being the only thing in between them.  Acting as the “bridge”.  Ultimately satisfying Oskar’s neediness to be loved, and achieving his goal, “incredibly close to my face”.  And with the key originating from his dad who died, Foer is able to show the larger idea that those who go through trauma will always seek some form of closure.
