         <description><![CDATA[<div>Performance goals&nbsp;<br>A performance goal is one that promotes a positive self-image and reputation. When students are guided by performance goals, they are preoccupied with normative ideals and want to do whatever it takes to appear intelligent, obtain prestige, and receive praise and recognition.<br><br>Learning goals<br>A learning goal is one where students try to gain competence and really learn what the assignment or activity can teach them. Students who make learning goals are more likely to gain deeper understanding of content than those who make performance goals. <br><br><br></div>]]></description>

People are motivated to engage in behaviors that will help them achieve high-value goals.</li><li>Attainment value is the satisfaction gained from mastering and completing a goal or task.</li><li>Intrinsic value is the satisfaction a person gets from simply doing the task, no matter the outcome. This is the source of intrinsic motivation.</li><li>Instrumental value is not an end goal, but provide a means by which an end goal is accomplished.&nbsp;This is the source of extrinsic motivation.</li></ul>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>In HLW, the author states that when students are confident in their work and perceive little or no support they may be defiant and take and "I'll show you" type of attitude. However, I have observed many instances of defiance that I believe are caused by lack of confidence. When students think they can't complete a task, even with supportive teachers and tools, it seems the lack of confidence manifests as defiance and refusal to initiate the task. </div>]]></description>
