Florence.

She was a member of the most prestigious
physical and astronomical societies, Margherita
Hack was also director of the Department of
Astronomy of the University of Trieste from 1985
to 1991 and from 1994 to 1997. She was a
member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei
(national partner in the class of physical,
mathematical and natural sciences; second
category: astronomy, geodesy, geophysics and
applications; section A: Astronomy and
applications) .She has worked for numerous
American and European observatories and has
been a long-time member of the ESA and NASA
working groups . In Italy, with an intense work of

promotion, she has obtained that the Italian
astronomical community expand its activity in
the use of various satellites reaching a level of
international acknowledge.
Why she was famous:
Margherita Hack has explored the universe
through ultraviolet rays starting from a star
known as Epsilon Aurigae.
It is a supergiant of magnitude 3, 6500 light years
away and two hundred thousand times brighter
than the Sun. It is an eclipsing variable with an
orbital period of 27 years (9883 days). According
to a model proposed by Margherita Hack, the
eclipsing star has a concentric shell structure and
is surrounded by rings of ionized gas: this
explains the gradual paling of the eclipsed
companion. The dimensions of the eclipsing star
are enormous: the diameter is 2800 times that of
the Sun and the color is dark red.
