AGAIN and AGAIN (Refugee by Alan Gratz) by Mrs. Runestad

Tell about one interesting "Again and Again" theme or motif that you have noticed while reading about Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud. How does this repetition help you understand the life of a refugee more clearly.

In Refugee, all three characters experience events that make them step up as an adult. For example, Josef had his bar mitsvah and he became an "adult." However, Josef came to the realization that his bar mitsvah didn't make him an adult, being responsible did. So, when his father was acting like a child, Josef stepped up and became the man of the family. Isabel helped save Ivan's father when he fell out of the boat that he built. She was the youngest one, but took the most daring responsibility. Mahmoud had to be very mature when his apartment got blown up. He was very mature, remained calm, and went to search for the rest of his family. All the characters experienced little spikes of maturity throughout the story.

One thing that transpired between all the characters in refugee is the sea. The sea brought bad doing to all the characters in some way or another. For instance Isabel's grandmother was killed by the sea as well as almost killing her when she jumped out to go save a fellow ship mate. For Mahmoud when he and a bunch of other Syrians were escaping to Greece through the mediterranean sea, the boat hit a rock and capsized spilling everyone off the boat in to the sea separating all of them and all could potentially drown and for Josef when his boat stopped for quarantine the nazis started harassing the passengers leading to Josef's dad jumped the ship.

The phrase Manaña, Manaña or tomorrow was a constant again and again in the book with all three of the characters. In Josef's story when they arrive on the coast of Cuba on the ship, and after they pass the "Medical" exam they are told Manaña, Manaña, which means tomorrow, tomorrow on page 135. Then continuously told Manaña, Manaña each day for a while, for example on page 147 they were also told again Manaña Manaña. In Isabel's story in the makeshift boat, they keep saying we'll be in Miami tomorrow. For example, on page 204 Señor Castillo says "Tomorrow, hopefully." In Mahmoud's story, the Smugglers keep telling his family the boat to take them to Greece tomorrow. On page 104 the Syrian says "Tomorrow" to his family. The Manaña, Manaña or tomorrow is one big again and again event in the book.

Throughout the story all three characters go through ups and downs. Mahmoud gets attacked by an airstrike, then he gets a car and almost makes it to Turkey, then they get pulled up by soldiers, turns out the soldiers are on their side, then they get shot at by the enemy, then they arrive at Turkey, then they are told by smugglers that the boat will be arriving tomorrow for the next few days, then an old man helps them get back to the boat when it arrives, it is a dingy and then it crashes and he loses more then half of his family. In Isabel's story Castro lets refugees escape, then they their boat gets shot at when leaving, then they finally get going, then their is too much water in the boat, but they get it out, then a tanker is heading straight for them, then Senior Castillo falls off the boat, then Isabel saves him. Josef starts by losing his father to the Nazis. 6th months later is his bar mitzvah, then they must leave Germany, then while they were on the train Josef went into the Germany section and his star of David fell off, the boy who caught it didn't turn him in, then they find out his father has gone mad, then on the boat Josef has his bar mitzvah, then they cant get in to Cuba and Nazis attack them.

Another person is Mahmoud and with his family they took a rubber boat that pops and Mahmoud loses his father and brother and his mother had to sacrifice her daughter so she could survive. In Josef's story it was on page 34-5 when he thanked the hitler youth for not turning him in. In Isabel's (Page 47)story it was when she convinced the fisherman to take her trumpet and her cat for enough gasoline to reach Miami. Finally in Mahmouds story it was when the kind man offered them a place to stay and a ride to the beach(page 127).

They All Lose Someone.
In the story Refugee there are three people named Josef, Isabel, and Mahmoud. They all have lost someone in the story. Josef lost his father because he was ill and wasn't allowed on the boat. They had to leave because Cuba wouldn't allow them in. The caption still wouldn't let them on the boat. Isabel lost her friend Ivan. Ivan and Isabel were swimming along side their boat and a shark attacked Ivan. He got pulled up onto the boat but he just lost to much blood so they had a funeral for him they killed a shark so the other ones scattered. Mahmoud lost his little sister Hanna when there dinghy exploded and they had to float. He lost her when he saw a dinghy going by and he hoped onto it with his mother and sister. He gave his sister away so she wouldn't die and he let go of the dinghy with his mom. It was hard to stick together in this book for some of these charters.

Manaña, Manaña

The Sea

Tomorrow” becomes a refrain that people often repeat to refugees in each story—when Josef wants to know when they can disembark from the St. Louis once they have arrived in Cuba; when Isabel wonders when they might arrive in Miami; when Mahmoud and his family attempt to catch the boat from Greece to Turkey.
