Who made the major decisions in your family? Mother? Father? Both? Other family members?

I think both my father and mother play an important role in raising the family. Everyone has their own job, and they respect each other's work. I think this is extremely important when both share their economic and family expenses. In raising our children, they all care about us, so we get to know and share them both. In addition to other issues, they often discuss and contribute ideas and considerations to make a decision. And I think this shows respect for the opponent and avoids unnecessary controversy. Therefore in my family, both my parents have equalities in the arrangements.

Was competition or cooperation stressed?

In my opinion, the competition is very stressful because it causes many unnecessary problems, especially towards youngsters. For example, in my country, achievements from school seem very important to determine your value. Therefore, parents' expectations increasing depends on the other students' progress or between different family members. Obviously, the competition, along with stress, can lead to more severe mental health, like depression, because they will lose all their confidence when compared with other people. And I believe that each individual will have their talents and abilities to become the proper person.

In general, would your family be classified as formal or informal?

My family is a typical formal family, the same as other families in Eastern countries. We always have to show the appropriate attitude towards the elderly and use formal language when communicating with them. More rules are presented in my family, such as tend to be accessible during times that families are not together. We need to inform and be allowed by parents to go out without family. This factor, sometimes, makes me feel uncomfortable due to lacking freedom for private life. Moreover, before making any decision, all youth has to ask permission from parents, because any mistakes can cause some problems and rumors for my family from the other surrounding people. Thus, from all the elements I mentioned above, my family is considered as a very formal family.

How were you rewarded?

I think rewarding is a magnificent culture in my family. When someone in the family achieves something, they will be rewarded. And the value of a reward is often based on the success they achieve. For example, last year, when I passed a visa to the US, my parents rewarded me for a trip to Europe. Or if I passed the English test to get admission to the Utah university, they give me a small amount of money to celebrate a party with my friends. I think this is very important to inspire and motivate everyone in my family to achieve more in the future.

How did you learn about religious matters?

I learn about the religious issues that come from my grandmother. My family, like other families in Vietnam, often follows Buddhism and follows its religious beliefs. When I was young, I used to attend temple retreats on occasions like Buddha's Birthday or the full moon. And my mother also let me take seminary courses at the temple every holiday. I also have to follow family rules such as eating only vegetables on select days. I find that attending Buddhism is a very important thing to help me learn the values in life and avoid bad situations.
