The Heritage Foundation is a U.S. conservative public policy organization based in Washington, D.C. It's mission is to develop and promote conservative public policies based on the principles of free enterprise, limited government, individual freedom, traditional American values, and a strong national defense. The write of this specific article, Charles Stimson, believes that the death penalty serves three objectives: general deterrence, specific deterrence, and retribution. General deterrence is the message that gets sent to people who are thinking about committing awful crimes, and that if they do do it, they could be sentenced to death. Specific deterrence means that the person who committed the awful crimes won't be alive anymore to continue committing these crimes. Lastly, retribution is society's moral judgement which they decide what happens to the person who committed the crime.

This article is written by David Muhlhausen, who is a research fellow for the Heritage Foundation. In his article, he talks about how he believes that some crimes are so horrifying and inherently wrong that they deserve life sentence or the death penalty. He also talks about different studies and statistics. For example, he explains that a study by Kenneth Land of Duke University and others concluded that, from 1994 through 2005, each execution in Texas was associated with a decrease of up to 2.5 murders.

This site presents both sides of this highly debated topic of whether or not the death penalty should be allowed. Supporters think that the death penalty is an important tool for preserving law and order, deters crime, costs less than life imprisonment, help families of victims grieve, and make sure that the crimes can never happen again. Those who are against it think that the death penalty no effect on lowering crime, wrongly gives governments the power to take human life, and lead to social injustices due to targeting people of color and people who cannot afford good attorneys.

In this paper, he explains the main arguments from both sides of the debate over the death penalty; neither pro nor con position is supported in his paper, which makes it neutral. He talks about six arguments which include both sides: retribution, deterrence, miscarriage of justice, recidivism, incapacitation, and brutalization. His goal is for readers to form their own opinions and conclusions on this debate.

Before desiring these, it explains how it's very important to look at both sides with an open mind because it is such a controversial topic. One of the advantages listed are that a sentence of life in prison is disproportionate to the crime. Another is that it eliminates the possibility of future victims or crimes. A disadvantage that is described was that the death penalty could possible execute someone who is innocent. Another disadvantage listed is that the cost to prosecute the death penalty is much higher than other cases.

A Biblical Perspective on the Death Penalty

The main argument from this perspective is that because life is sacred, those who wrongfully take another human life must lose their own lives in return. There are many scriptures that support this argument. An example is Genesis 9:6, which states "Whoever sheds the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God has God made man." This is basically stating that any man who kills another should be killed as well.

This article was written by Adrian Maldonado for the North Texas Daily. Texas currently uses the death penalty. He believes that the death penalty provides closure to the family who lost someone. He thinks that the death penalty is not a system that is meant to be “eye-for-an-eye,” but it is instead used to punish unjust actions. He also explains how people against capital punishment see it as a cruel and unusual punishment. However, the justice system has humane ways of execution, such as lethal injection, which is the primary method of execution in all 29 states that use the death penalty.
