I feel that the best way to be mentally healthy is to aim to look for positives in all situations, and to try maintain a healthy environment. I feel being in a healthy and comfortable environment can help to reduce stress levels as you don't have any stress factors to impact you. I feel that after reading this aspect I have developed my understanding of the importance to minimise insensitive practices that negatively impact health outcomes. i believe that as a future nurse, it is critically important for me to provide a culturally safe and respectful environment and perform culturally respectful practice. This knowledge will be useful to me in the workplace so that I am able to prevent any cultural bias when treating my patients so as that they are able to receive only the best care. Three of these determinants include, income, unemployment and job security and housing, basic amenities and the environment. Income is a powerful determinant of health and affects a lot of Australians. In the case for refugees and migrants, when they come to Australia, they are most likely required to leave all valuable possessions behind, including documentation which demonstrates their qualification of possession. Due to this they are left unable to provide qualifications to employers and left unable to obtain work, and therefore income. This commonly results in leaving them in poverty and can remain in this situation for several years. In regards to unemployment and job security, it is the same. As they sometimes must leave documentation of qualifications behind, they can be left unemployed for years. Language barriers can also be a cause to unemployment. Refugees and migrants who do not speak English may also find it difficult to apply for jobs due to language barriers. Finally, the determinant of housing and basic amenities is a critical determinant of health which impacts migrants and refugees. Refugees tend to be resettled into inadequate housing and struggle to afford the housing they have. In regards to Immunisation, I believe that upon arrival in Australia, refugees should be provided with all outstanding immunisations they may have not received by local clinics, to help prevent infection and the spread of infection among them, their families and the community. I also believe that refugees should be provided with the opportunity to see a mental health professional to talk about their journey, and if needed be provided with the resources and medication they may need to improve their mental health.
