Between July 22 and mid-September 1942, over 300,000 people are deported from the Warsaw ghetto: more than 250,000 of them are deported to the Treblinka killing center. Deportees are forced to the Umschlagplatz (deportation point), which is connected to the Warsaw-Malkinia rail line. They are crowded into freight cars and most are deported, via Malkinia, to Treblinka. The overwhelming majority of the deportees are killed upon arrival in Treblinka. In September, at the end of the 1942 mass deportation, only about 55,000 Jews remain in the ghetto.

The Germans announce the establishment of a ghetto in Warsaw. All Jewish residents of Warsaw are ordered into the designated area, which will be sealed off from the rest of the city in November 1940. Construction of a wall, more than 10 feet high and topped with barbed wire, begins. The Germans guard the ghetto boundary closely to prevent movement between the ghetto and the rest of Warsaw. The Warsaw ghetto is the largest of the ghettos in both area and population. More than 350,000 Jews—about 30 percent of the city's population—are confined in about 2.4 percent of the city's total area.

Within in the Ghettos, there were councils made who were made by Jew to keep "order", the council were made up of formerly middle class Jews. One of the councils main jobs was to counting the people and their assets, as well as recruiting some jews for manual labour. A main figure of one of these Ghettos was Chaim Rumkoski, who appointed himself as a leader of one of the Ghettos which had 150,000 Jews.

As the war effort continued, the need for cheap, and preferably free, labour increased. The Nazis increasingly turned to utilising the incarcerated Jews for forced labour such as construction work. By the summer of 1940, the Jewish Council in Warsaw was asked to supply lists of able-bodied Jewish men to work in labour camps. Failure to supply the amount of men asked for resulted in random round-ups of Jewish men in the streets. Conditions in the camps were abysmal , and workers sent there would often die as a result of the lethal conditions, or return back to the ghetto scarred by their experiences. Workers were not paid for their efforts.

The Nazis established a council who's responsibility was to carry out their orders within the Ghettos. They were reffered to as the Judenrat. A few examples of specific tasks included:

This created moral dilemma for many of the elected. They had to make a decision between choosing between standing with their community and facing the Nazi punishment, or abide by their command, and deal with the shame and guilt that came with compliance.

The Warsaw ghetto uprising in the spring of 1943 was the largest single revolt by Jews. Hundreds of Jews fought the Germans and their auxiliaries in the streets of the ghetto. Thousands of Jews refused to obey German orders to report to an assembly point for deportation. In the end the Nazis burned the ghetto to the ground to force the Jews out. Life in Ghettos was abhorrently cruel. There was not adequate heating throughout the winter. Jewish people also did not own clothes suited to such extreme weather, and many froze to death during the colder months. Plumbing for the Jewish was low on the Nazi priority list, so they were forced to dispose of human waste on the streets, along with other garbage. Many children were orphaned and forced onto the streets. Hunger was rampant, there was a severe lack of hygiene and sometimes housing. Tens of thousands died on the streets from lack of proper care.
