         <description><![CDATA[<div>Gandhi often encouraged Indians to challenge the British imperialism in their country. Though they protested frequently, Gandhi believed only in civil disobedience, he did not condone violence. Beginning in 1930, Gandhi was thrown into jail on occasion, for years at time, just for his opposition to British rule. And still he persisted. After nearly two decades of protests, in 1947, India was granted its independence.</div>]]></description>
