They continued federation from the soviet union. There is a president and a prime minister. They both share governing responsibilities as head of state. There are also deputy prime ministers and federal ministers. The president of Russia is the head of the executive branch. Russias government fears the challenge of separatism as a threat also.

Russia's economy depends on mostly oil as of today. Russia's economy isn't doing as bad as people think. Russia has a lot of oil, natural gas and metals that make up a major share of Russia's exports. Oil and gas make up more than 60% of Russia's exports. In 2014 there was an oil pricing collapse which devastated the economy. A lot of net importers benefited from this collapse of oil pricing. In Russia 4 out of 10 families can't always afford food. Russia has made sure to maintain high employment levels because of this.

How leaders are elected

Russian presidents are elected every six years. Each president has a two consecutive term limitation. In 2012 the term of office was 4 years but it got changed to 6 years. The prime minister is elected by the president and then confirmed by the Duma. If it rejects the nominee 3 times, The president calls a new election. To be a president in Russia you have to be atleast 35 years old and permanently resided for 10 years. In Russia's constitution it doesn't have a limit for how many terms someone can serve for, only that they can't serve more than 2 consecutive terms. Therefor people can get re-elected after sitting out a term.
