Hans Selye once said "To be totally without stress is to be dead." This is becasue stress is the pressure placed on an organisim to adjust to its enviroment. He also believes that there are three distinct stages of coping with any kind of stress. The first being alarm reaction. This is when your body begins to mobilize resouces such as adrenaline, noradrenaline, and cortisol. The second being the stage of resistence, in this stage the body returns to normal and begins to cope with the stress, although this in this stage you are not resistant to other stressors. Lastly is the stage of exhastion. In this stage the body is drained of resources and stress hormones. Some signs include anxiety, apathy, irritability, mental fatigue, an avoidence of responsibilities and relationships. Some physical signs include frequent illness, exhastion, overuse of medicinces.

A boy, who happens to be terrified of heights, is stuck upon a water tower. (Alarm Reaction) He looks down the tower and his palms begin to sweat, his adrenal glans begin pumbing adrenaline into his blood stream, and he starts feeling sick. (Stage of Resistence) The boy has been stuck upon the water tower for two hours now. He has stopped shaking and sweating. Although whenever the wind sways the tower he feels sick again. (stage of exhaustion) The boy had been stuck upon the water tower for three and a half hours before he became so tired that he curled up in a ball and sleept until the firemen arrived.
