It kept freezing on me, but I could listen to some parts of this week's lecture, and the Justice System caught my attention. I thought it was interesting to know how the women's population has drastically increased over the years, and this just brought me back to when I used to work with transitional-age youth in a girl's facility who committed serious crimes as well as adults in a Mental Health facility and in both programs all of the women was placed in a restorative program to give them opportunities to be linked to community resources, basic life skills and how to be a productive citizen in society. Most of these women had mental health challenges that stemmed from childhood; listening to you just brought me back. I enjoyed the comparison of the restorative justice system and the criminal justice system. One focused more on the rehabilitation of the offender and restoring the lives of the victims and the other on punishment. This brings me to think about my career in the criminal justice system as a correctional officer where I was able to experience the focus of punishment in our criminal justice system. I had so much sympathy and empathy for those inmates who would be released without any tools to help them reintegrate back into society or mend the relationships that may have been negatively affected by their crimes. It was interesting to hear how victims suffer from less long term effects and essentially benefit more from restorative justice because I feel like the idea that someone has to be punished at the max capacity in order for a victim to feel safe is constantly pushed in our society. I find restorative justice beneficial for its emphasis on empowering individuals in conflict resolution, its integrated approach to addressing underlying issues, and its focus on fostering relationships and accountability. The lecture has heightened my appreciation for how this approach encourages individuals involved in criminal activities to take responsibility and make amends, potentially facilitating personal growth and reducing the likelihood of recurring offenses. I do recognize the challenges associated with restorative justice, including power imbalances, inconsistent implementation, compatibility issues with legal systems, and resource constraints. In contrast, my reservations about the current legal approach, highlighted during the lecture, stem from its heavy reliance on punishment and deterrence, potentially conserving cycles of criminal activity and overlooking the importance of rehabilitation.
