We disagree with the article. The five paragraph essay provides a format for our students. We need to ensure that they understand it is not the only way to write an essay; however they also need to have a structure that will act as a springboard in high school.

At the intermediate level, many students rely upon and appreciate the clarity of the structure.

That being said, the five paragraph essay is not an end in itself. Rather, it is a foundation for developing cogent, structured arguments in writing.

As a corollary, students need to learn how this basic essay structure can be developed and expanded as they move through the educational system.

In our opinion, English is an artform and our 7/8 students need the structure and opportunity to organize their writing before they can move on to something bigger.

We enjoyed her humour and could appreciate that as we read the article. We have both taught the structure at our grade level and we have seen students freeze up at the word essay. They always tend to ask "How many sentences?"

Many students require structure and a starting point to develop ideas.

That being said, like formal speeches, writing that is overly structured does not always provide opportunities to foster robust and enthusiastic writers. The challenge going forward, then, is to balance these two concerns by providing structure while also facilitating opportunities that allow students to develop complex arguments in an interesting way that avoids too many constrictions.
