In 1942 Hans Scholl founded the “White Rose” movement with some of his fellow medical students. Among the White Rose members were Sophie Scholl, Christoph Probst, Willi Graf, and Alexander Schmorell.

The group conducted an anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign that called for active opposition to the Nazi regime. Their activities started in Munich on 27 June 1942; they ended with the arrest of the core group by the Gestapo on 18 February 1943. Munich at this time heavily bombarded and its historic center was almost completely destroyed by the Allies.

1.Producing and Distributing Anti-Nazi Leaflets:

The core activity of the White Rose was the production and distribution of leaflets that contained anti-Nazi and anti-Holocaust sentiments. These leaflets were meant to awaken public consciousness and encourage resistance against the oppressive regime. The group wrote and printed several pamphlets, detailing the crimes of the Nazi regime, including the persecution of Jews.

Graffiti and Wall Postings:

Members of the White Rose engaged in acts of graffiti and wall postings to spread their message. They would write slogans and anti-Nazi statements on public walls, especially in prominent areas where the messages would be widely seen. This was a way to communicate their opposition and educate the public about the atrocities occurring under Hitler's rule.

Sabotage and Civil Disobedience:

While the White Rose primarily focused on non-violent resistance, there were instances of individual members engaging in acts of sabotage and civil disobedience. This could include damaging Nazi property or refusing to comply with certain orders, demonstrating their personal opposition to the regime's policies.

Appealing to Intellectual and Moral Conscience:

The White Rose recognized the importance of appealing to the intellectual and moral conscience of the German people. Their leaflets often contained philosophical and ethical arguments against the crimes of the Nazi regime, emphasizing the need for individuals to think critically and take a stand against injustice, particularly the genocide of the Jewish population.

Coordination with Like-minded Individuals:

Members of the White Rose sought to expand their network and collaborate with like-minded individuals who opposed the Nazi regime. They aimed to create a broader resistance movement by connecting with people who shared their values and commitment to fighting against the atrocities, including the Holocaust. This collaboration extended beyond their immediate circle to include others who were willing to stand against the tyranny of the Nazi government.

Unfortunately, the activities of the White Rose were discovered by the Gestapo (the secret police of Nazi Germany), leading to the arrest of several key members in February 1943. Hans and Sophie Scholl, along with another member, Christoph Probst, were quickly tried in a show trial conducted by the People's Court, a Nazi kangaroo court. The trial lasted only a few hours, and the verdict was a foregone conclusion. On February 22, 1943, Hans and Sophie Scholl and Christoph Probst were executed by guillotine.

Other members of the White Rose, including some of those involved in the distribution of the leaflets, were arrested, tried, and sentenced to various punishments, including imprisonment. The actions of the White Rose and the fate of its members have been commemorated as a symbol of resistance against totalitarianism and oppression. Today, they are remembered as brave individuals who stood up against the atrocities of the Nazi regime, even though their resistance was ultimately crushed by the authorities.
