In my opinion I think he change because he was more passionate about drawing even though he doesn't want to admit it.In the book he kept telling the the guy, "I don't do drawing". He wanted to change because he got inspired by the drawing he first saw the Arctic Tern. He saw the emotions of the bird through drawing , and wanted to draw that too. The only thing he stay the same that he acts like his brothers and he can't control it. His dad and brothers show him stuff that wasn't suppose to be right thing to do.
