On April 9th 1940, the Nazi German army invaded both Norway and Denmark. This started the long occupation of these countries, which lasted until May 1945.

On April 9, 1949 the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation is created. Denmark and Norway are among the states who signed the treaty on that day.

Norway and Denmark held a referendum about whether the countries should become members of the European Economic Community.

People in Denmark express the wish to become a member state. However, in Norway, 53,5% of those who participated did not want to join.

Sweden and Norway decided whether they would become members of the European Union.

In Sweden, the referendum confirmed the desire to join the EU. The results were 53% in favour of joining.

For Norway, this is the second referendum with negative results on this matter. This time, 52,2% of voters were against.

Greenland leaves the European Economic Community.

In 1982, the inhabitants of Greenland decided in a referendum that they no longer wished to be part of the EEC. This could be done thanks to the 1979 referendum, giving Greenland the ability to vote on its membership in the European Communities.
