That's a lot of people visiting one nation! What all people visit first is London, and many people never visit the rest of England. They miss interesting places across and throughout England such as small old churches, long beaches and quiet little villages. There are also small theatres where you can watch a Shakespeare play, and there are exciting big cities around where you can watch a game of cricket or football, take a boat along one of the rivers, or visit an old castle, you can also eat around of London, there are big cities and small cities, shops and a lot of music.

England is a very beautiful country. But who are the English?

Joanet

The first chapter I read explains that we can see various "stately homes" in England. What I found most interesting was the house of Sir Winston Churchill, Britain's Prime Minister at the time of the Second World War. He is one of the most representatives and iconic characters of the 20th century, and the one about whom the most has been written. He was an extravagant, statesman, great strategist, provocateurs, painter, loyal, monarchist, military man, great reader, writer, brilliant parliamentarian... His house was Chartwell, near Seven oaks in Kent; he lived here for forty years. A house that has great relevance to the family life of the Prime Minister. Which you can see in the series The Crown.

I present you some links about the house and Sir Winston Churchill:

https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/visit/kent/chartwell

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chartwell

https://www.gov.uk/government/history/past-prime-ministers/winston-churchill

Anna

The second chapter I read was about theatres and some of the most famous writers. Of course, it talks about Shakespeare, among many others; but I was surprised that it talks about this wife: Anne Hathaway. We can visit his house and his wonderful garden; it is north-west of the town in the village of Shottery.

The strangest thing is that if you search for her on the internet, you'll find a current American actress; but if you put the last name Shakespeare, you can find information about her. As a curiosity, when they got married, she was 26 years old and he was 18.

One of Shakespeare's sonnets, number 145, may refer to Anne Hathaway: the word "hate away" may be a pun on "Hathaway". Unfortunately, there is not much information about her, her history, life and her role in literature.

https://es.findagrave.com/memorial/9048/anne-hathaway

It was undoubtedly an interesting and very informative read.

Anna

New Castle is on the northeast coast of England.

The Quayside, the part of the city near the river, has many cafés, bars, restaurants,... The most curious of this place is that there are Seven bridges across the river Tyne, the newest is the Gateshead Millennium Bridges. When big boats go up the river, the bridges open and close like eyes.

To the south of Newcastle there is the city of York, it has some wonderful old buildings, castles and museums, and it has a cathedral-York Minster with amazing stained-glass windows.

Oxford and Cambridge are the two most famous university cities. Many people like to visit the parks and college gardens next to the river.

Bath is a city famous for its Royal Crescent and other buildings. There are Roman baths with hot water. They listened to music, met and talked, and looked for a husband or a wife.

Bristol is on the River Avon. Once boats from all over the world come up and down the river, but now the old docks are full of shops, cafés and art galleries.

Royal theatre is in Bristol, it is the most beautiful theatre of England.

When you visit towns and cities in England you can use buses, taxis, underground, trains, but you see more when you walk and it's free.

Isabel

In the north-west is the Yorkshire Dales National Park. In the north-east is th North York Moors National Park.

Three famous sisters lived at Haworth, in Yorkshire - the writers Charlotte, Emily and Anne Brontë.

In England you can explore and enjoy more places like this.

The same "England" comes from "Angle-land". The Angle and Saxon people came here from Europe. Before them, the Roman lived here from about four hundred years. And they made a town next to the River Thames, and called it Londinium. Today, its name is London. Later the Vikings came from Denmark and Norway. In 1066, England had a new king. He was William of Normandy. When he came to England, in the nineteenth century, thousands of Irish people came to England and stayed here. Through the twentieth century, people came to England and made a new life here. After the Second World War, many came from the West Indies, Africa, and Asia. Today, nearly fifty million live in England, and thousands more come and live here every year. They come from Eastern Europe, and many other people of the countries of the world. Some are looking for work, some want to be with their families, others are looking for a better life. They bring with them their theatre, food, music, and art.

Yes, you can find people from every part of the world here! Come and see....

Joanet
