The Vessel was built as a replacement for the QE2 which had been sailing since the 1960's and would later be decommissioned in 2008, and sold to become a hotel and entertainment complex in Dubai, similar to her sister RMS Queen Mary. HM the Queen is preserving the famous tradition of having the reigning monarch of the time christen its vessels.

The RMS Queen Mary is a time-honored vessel, who was and still is a pioneer in the shipping industry. The vessel was launched on September 26, 1934, and was decommissioned leaving Southampton, England for the last time on October 31st, 1967. During her sailing days she was and engineering marvel, traveling across the worlds oceans at a top speed of 30.99 knots or 35.6 mph, faster than almost any vessel of her size. Currently she is docked at her permanent home in Long Beach, California, catering to guests daily as a fully functioning hotel, named The Queen Mary Hotel.

The RMS Queen Elizabeth II or 'QE2' was christened on September 20th, 1967 in Southampton, England. The liner sported the 'famous' Cunard Red and Black funnel which Cunard would later use on all its new ships. The liner was built for transatlantic service, traveling up to 32.5 knots or about 37.4 mph. Her speed was a key factor in her success due to the shortened travel time between Southampton and New York, a route she routinely sailed.

The RMS Queen Elizabeth, the second member of the Cunard fleet to be from the Vista Class. The QE was the sixth Cunard ship to bear the Queen, and the third to carry the name Elizabeth. Being a sister to the Queen Victoria means that both QE and QV share an almost identical layout. This allowed the line to fix what did and didn’t work on the Queen Victoria, onboard the Queen Elizabeth. While she was almost identical to her sister, she weighed slightly more coming in at 92,000 gross tons, largely due to a more vertical stern. She is capable of carrying 2,092 passengers and she is the second largest Cunard ship ever built after QM2.

The year was 2002, Cunard had just officially announced their plans to build a “New Cunarder.” This vessel would later be named RMS Queen Victoria. This new vessel would very from previous Cunarders’, and would be built as a modern cruise ship rather than an ocean liner. The ship followed a modified Vista Class design, which was designed for Holland America Line, Cunard's sister brand, under the ownership of Carnival Corp. The design has been used by many other cruise lines including P&O and Costa, but Cunard made sure to add special alterations to the vessel, to make it fit to be a 'Queen'. Some of the alterations included a “Reinforced hull plating on the bow to allow for direct transatlantic crossings, Additional length added to the hull and superstructure to accommodate the Grills Restaurants and Queens Room, Removal of glass lifts (elevators) from the exterior of the vessels for strengthening purposes, and the inclusion of Cunard funnel design based on QE2’s, with scoop and cowling.

The year was 2011, it had been almost 75 years since a non Cunard vessel held the callsign GBTT. The Call-sign had been part of the Cunard family for 75 years and had been given to Cunard by the reigning monarch (at the time of the QE, HM Queen Elizabeth II), but Cunard ended its 75 year reign due to its transfer of registry of ships. For years Cunard, registered their vessels in Southampton. This meant that the ship had to abide by ritish law, when it came to employment and many other things, but it was in 2011, that Cunard transferred their ships registry to Hamilton, Bermuda. While Bermuda does still have an affiliation with Britain, since the ships were no longer registered in Britain, the Queen Elizabeth was stripped of her call-sign GBTT.

This ‘White Star Service’, is a reflection of the previous ages of Ocean travel and the White Star Line, which was known for its premium service for first class passengers. This service is complemented by the engagement of the lines British roots, including afternoon tea service and white glove service.
