After World War 2 the government thought it best to have more control over Germany. Germany was divided into 4 zones controlled by the four countries: the U.S., Great Britain, France, and Soviet Union. With the country divided many of the citizens were impacted and were divided politically. The Soviet Union made their side communist and the other sections were Capitalist.

The Truman Doctrine was a speech that President Truman gave to explain what the United States was going to do about the countries that could be influenced by communism. President Truman knew that if certain countries like Greece and Turkey became communist the Soviet Union would be able to spread their influence faster and that was not something that the U.S. wanted. In order to contain communism Truman would help give economic and financial aid to help prevent Greece and Turkey from becoming communist. With the U.S. helping these countries it affected the Soviets plan and affected the countries the U.S. was helping by making them need to decide whether to become communist or stay loyal to the U.S. because they helped them.

The Hollywood 10 were 10 people that refused to testify to the HUAC about being or not being a communist, because they felt it was a violation to their civil rights. These people got blacklisted in Hollywood, had to spend a year in prison, and $1,000 fines. This impacted how people saw the government as being abusive of people's civil rights and willing to hurt people if they refuse to testify or if they are really communist. The Hollywood 10 is a good example of what could happen to people if they refuse to comply and get their reputations destroyed.

The Berlin Airlifts were able to send food and other supplies to the people and were able to help countless people. This impacted the people of Berlin by giving them hope and a means to survive if it weren't for the Berlin Airlifts the people of Berlin probably would have starved or would've become part of communism. This also gave hope to the U.S. that communism would be contained and kept away from other countries.

The Red Scare was what America called it but it was basically the fear of communism that affected them through spies or their families. This started because of McCarthyism or Senator McCarthy he started it by accusing countless people of being communist. This made people scared and if they were really spies then even their own families could be a communist spy. This impacted how people saw America. McCarthy made people in America feel unsafe and made people outside of America think that it wasn't as free as they were told it was.

The Korean War was a very deadly war; many people died and it was a civil war between North Korea which was communist and South Korea which was non-communist. This would affect how the U.S. would fight and help aid. When the U.S. helped and the war had ended thousands of American soldiers had died and they had to pay billions. No one won the Korean War, the country was divided after the war and no one could do anything. This war ending and starting didn't change much of anything but it did affect the fear of communism by making it grow and making the U.S. wanting to reject Democrats and feeling the need to elect a republican.

After Truman was president he had decided not to try to campaign again this made people want to elect a republican the first republican in 20 years. Eisenhower was not like Truman at all because he was more focused on aggressive tactics and the military while Truman was more focused on economic and financial aid. This made both of their attempts to contain communism very different from each other. This impacted how the communist countries would be treated and how the other countries would be protected.

This was a similar place to where it had started before the war and so after the war the 38th parallel stayed the same the war didn't change that.

When Eisenhower was made president he was much different then Truman so while Truman stayed focused on economics Eisenhower used a different approach, to contain communism through the military. The Eisenhower Doctrine made it so a country could ask for help from the U.S. military forces if they were being threatened by armed aggression from another state, specifically the Soviet Union. There was one moment that really counted and left an impact on the world and this was in Lebanon. The president had asked the U.S. for protection from rivals and while there weren't armed aggression or Soviet involvement it did have connections. Eisenhower sent the troops to help because he wanted to send a message to anyone that the U.S. was going to act to protect the people from communism and that the U.S. wasn't messing around, especially not Eisenhower.

The first presidential televised debate was with John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon. This televised debate was made to help people decide who should be their next president. John F. Kennedy really impacted the crowd because he spoke clearly and without hesitation and looked straight at the camera which made it feel like he was really talking to you and people liked the way he did that while Nixon didn't do that. This helped influence how people thought of Kennedy and made them trust that even though he was inexperienced he could be a good president.

John F. Kennedy was famous for many things because he was unique in different ways. For example he was the first president that did not have any government background and he was the youngest. He got elected using the popularity of his name Kennedy and used it to fuel his campaign because the Kennedy's were very rich. This impacted how people would think they were curious and wanted to see what he could do and how he would help and to see if he was the right person for the job. After JFK was elected he gave a speech with the famous words "Ask not what your country can do for you but what you can do for your country." This influenced how people responded to the new president and they wanted to see him prove his worth and tell if they had made the right choice. (Unfortunately JFK was assassinated before he could start his second term and it devastated America)

The Soviet Union built the wall to symbolize the division of the East and West. Germany was divided by the Yalta conference and they also divided Berlin because it was the Capital and they didn't want to give the capital to the Soviet Union because whoever has the capital eventually has the country. The Soviets knew this which is why they threatened to let Berlin starve unless they got Berlin but when that plan failed they decided to divide Berlin even more. This would impact the everyday lives of the people that lived in Berlin because half the people had to follow different politics than the other half. Also after the wall was built West Berlin got a lot of investment from America which helped them grow while the East didn't do as well because consumer goods were harder to get. The people struggled to live and grow when being divided.

After that embarrassing ordeal with the Bay of Pigs the Soviets were still sending weapons to Cuba including nuclear weapons and they were ready to launch. Kennedy had given Cuba a warning but he knew it wouldn't do much. Kennedy had to do something to stop this. He had a choice: he could either do a blockade or an invasion and whichever one he chose would determine war or not. Kennedy decided to do a blockade but not a regular blockade; he called it a Quarantine that would only block nuclear weapons. This impacted how the Cold War continued because both sides knew if they attacked they would use nuclear weapons and that would be very destructive and deadly. Kennedy's actions also impacted the Soviets response but eventually the U.S. moved their nuclear weapons out of Italy and Turkey and the Soviets withdrew theirs from Cuba.
