This is a flower bouquet from a secondary school student who brought this to show how grateful he is to the soldiers who fought during the Singapore's different occupations and to offer his small token of respect. I also found it very fascinating that he showed his gratitude by bringing a bouquet during a similar historical learning journey that his school has arranged. He thanks soldiers from different countries like Canada, Britain, India,China ,New Zealand and etc, who fought for Singapore's freedom . This small act of respect touches me a lot:)

The cemetery is very cool and I felt very sorry and shameful because at that time people at the age of 17 youngest were out there already fighting for war. Even though I am only 14, but they are just 3 years away from me and I myself believe that me at the age of 17 would definitely be living my life to the fullest when the people at those time were already fighting for the country, going out to war without even any experience or training. And also babies that died very young, like the ones that died at birth. I felt shameful because when I was there, I was laughing and pointing around and it was very rude to do that, as those were the people were the ones that protected singapore, sacrificing themselves just to protect their loved ones. If it wasn't for them we wouldn't be able to have such a great and wonderful environment for education. ( Carine I7)

I felt heartbroken when I saw the number of people who died for Singapore who sacrificed their lives for us . Without these people who sacrificed their lives, we wouldn’t be here right now living in peace . I learned a lot from thus learning journey . I learned that we have to always be prepared for any upcoming attacks , think about others not only yourself and to be brave . The most important thing I learned is that don’t take things for granted.

On this wall, the names carved are of those whose bodies were not able to be located and are now buried elsewhere in Malaysia. They fought with all their strength, regardless of age, ethnicity and family background for the freedom of men. For the privilege of our generation. For the sake of Singapore's future. It's unfortunate that their bodies are not able to be honored in the cemetery, knowing how much they've done for us. Today's society has been taking the soldier's hardships for granted when the terrifying situations they faced defending Singapore is nothing compared to the small things we complain about. Without their courage and bravery, we wouldn't be where we are today.
-Cassandra (I7)

What I have observed that there are numerous people that have sacrificed their lives, just imagining how their families have felt when they realised that they have loss someone they love alot because of the J.O. I am also very surprise that there are different ways that the soldiers have been buried, some of them have been cremated while the majority have be buried underneath the grasses. Every life that has been loss due to this war will be remembered not as a prisoner of war but a hero at work to serve and protect.
-Victoria (I7)

This place could also teach the new generation how privileged they are to have a loving family, great education and there will always be good food placed on the table everyday. They can learn to appreciate and be thankful for the people who sacrificed their life so that we could live in a safe and peaceful country.

i found it shocking at the number of deaths that took place during war . usually in class , when we learn about war it is simply just numbers , digits , but it really hit me when i saw the amount of tombstones in person . this isn’t just numbers but they are lives . lives that have been sacrificed for the country for their love ones and for us . they knew they might not survive but still put up their best shot no matter what and that we should be thankful of . they could have hid from war and completely survived it alive . they didn’t even get to live their dream or even one peaceful day , without their efforts we wouldn’t be where we are today . so we should pay more attention and let more people know that singapore isn’t singapore without them . let more people appreciate those who didn’t get to survive

i was extremely shocked at how young most of the soldiers were, from soldiers aged from 17 up to 56, some of these soldiers were not even given a chance to live a happy life before they had passed on. while some of the soldiers had to go to war even though they were quite old, which they should have been at home resting, however they took the initiative to stand up for singapore, and if were not for them we would definitely not be living in a peaceful country. some of the civilians which had passed on were also extremely young, not even being able to see the world yet, i felt extremely remorseful for them as they did not live a very good life as they could not enjoy it, without these people serving our country, we definitely would never have freedom and still be under the japanese rules.

I was shocked that Yusof Ishak’s tomb was also there as I had no idea. Other than him, I feel grateful and thankful for all those other selfless people who were willing to sacrifice themselves to protect Singapore and their loved ones. From all those graves that I saw, it really shocked me that people as young as 20 and below also died. Despite their ages and races, they all came together to protect the country willingly. I feel appreciative for their sacrifice as they could have decided not to give up their lives. I should be grateful for what I have and not take even the little things for granted.

Ezra I4

Since this is my first time coming to a cemetery I didnt really know what it was or who were there , I didn't even know Yusuf Ishak's tomb was there ,and the structure of this 'walls' in the picture was very interesting as it was shaped in an aeroplane from a different angle. Those who died during the war had their names carved on the walls. I felt extremely sad for them as some were as young as 17 years old and didn't had the chance to live their youth /life ,i felt really bad for them. I also learnt that before it was a cemetery, it was a prison where soldiers were tortured. I really feel that this trip is meaning and gave me new experiences.

It's quite saddening that there are those who are unknown due to disfiguration or the lost of their name tag. However, their graves are placed here since the people who buried them knew that they contributed to protecting this country. For all we could know, maybe one of them are related to us but unfortunately we would not know. It's a pity that most of them were not able to experience a normal, long life and have a family of their own like for those who were just young adults. As for the older ones, they were unable to spend a lot of time with their own family, having to properly raise their children and growing old with their partners.

-Ervina (I4)

I find what will happen to the Kranji War Memorial site when Singapore runs out of space to build intriguing. Will they dig out the fallen soldiers bodies out?Or will they leave it there and try to gain new land? Both ways would hurt singapore as it is double edged sword if one of the two actions were done.If they chose to dig out the bodies,it would be ironic as they buried the soldiers bodies there out of respect, but isn’t digging it back out for more space a disrespectful action? If they chose to leave it there,Singapore would have to go through the struggle of fighting to be able to reclaim more land.It may even cause deaths from riots over space and increasing prices of properties. But didnt the soldiers fight for the future generations peace? So we are still disrespecting them in the end...being ungrateful of their actions and sacrifices.

-Reuben I4

I find this grave interesting as this soldier’s death date Is the same as my birthday. This really touches me as I can imagine that on my birthday (30/12) my family was overjoyed however on the exact same day many years ago someone’s loved one died fighting for Singapore and the day (30/12) will forever be remembered as a day when they lost a love one but the exact same day (30/12) I celebrate as my birthday. It shows me how it was the same day but our fate’s on that day were totally different. Additionally, I was shocked by the young age of this solider when he died and admire how brave he was to fight for his country making major sacrifices at such a young age. Thinking about it, It also disappoints me that I do not think that those in their late teens to early twenties these days will do the same as they will be too selfish and push the problem to someone else rather than fight for their country.
